NEW YORK | 50 West 66th St | 775 FT | 70 FLOORS

Unlikely.

Agree with Stache. Not many development sites between 59th and 72nd on the west side and zoning bars some anyway. Much of the Lincoln Square neighborhood is also occupied by Lincoln Center, public housing to the west of it, and Juilliard. There also are historic districts along Central Park West and adjacent areas and in the northwest of the area. And much of Broadway has already been built up with buildings of forty floors or more. I live in one. All that together with neighborhood hostility will probably send most developers elsewhere.

Looks great!
The back of the Lincoln Center needs to be more welcoming

The rear of Lincoln Center is not attractive. When built some time ago a decision obviously was made to turn its back on the public housing to the west. It’s pretty hard to change that now given the wall that runs along Amsterdam. It would take a major investment the center is probably unlikely to even consider.

You are probably right - I just wish that NYC could solve some of the urban crimes committed in the city.

Don’tthink that crime is the issue right now in the area, though I can’t speak for the time when Lincoln Center was designed. It’s just the massiveness of any redo project.

I would say that the whole urban renewal development was an urban crime.
Here is a before and after (sorry for straying so far from the topic)

Hard to disagree with that

Timely enough, Lincoln center announced middle of last year that they were planning a renovation for the Amsterdam side of their campus, and were going into the community outreach phase of their planning.

Lincoln Center Press Room

  • Among the goals of the initiative are to:

  • Physically transform Lincoln Center’s Amsterdam Avenue side to extend welcome to communities approaching from the west.

  • Better serve close neighbors, including residents of New York City Housing Authority campuses at Amsterdam Houses and Addition, and students of LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts and the six high schools at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational Complex.

  • Create an improved performance park to meet artistic and community goals.

  • Commemorate the history and public memory of San Juan Hill and historic Lincoln Square.

  • Collaborate closely with neighbors, partners, and constituents to ensure a broad array of stakeholders have a voice in the process, allowing for a lasting, positive impact.*

Great news!

Wow! Thanks. That’s really good news. Guess my pessimism may be misplaced.

There is (or was) a mural on the west facing wall on the Amsterdam Avenue side of Lincoln Center that pays homage to “San Juan Hill”. This was a part of the local history I knew nothing about until seeing that mural.

All good news - thanks all for sharing…

Cocoon was lifted one floor up in height since my last update 2 weekends ago, I’d assume they are preparing to build the crown structure now. You can really see the “height” the mechanical floors/portion lifted this tower up in the bottom portion of cladding that is opaque. The single floor between the 2 portions of cladding is the first residential floor of the tower portion.
