It is eerie how this tower sits abandoned.

There were quite a few buildings like this when I visited Bangkok in 2001. My friend that lived there told me they were all eventually completed but it took years to get refinanced.

It’s rather sad that New York’s left-wing dysfunctionality is akin to Thailand. I think I’d prefer the Thai military junta to the Red Regime of NYC.

Robert Walpole. The problems are not all from the left. Rightish greed and value engineering play a role. The Kaufman hotels, for example, are not from lefty inspirations for insipid buildings. And, heaven forbid, it may actually be true that large buildings don’t belong in some areas. In any case it’s hard to blame one brand of politics for the issues you see. Spread your critiques around!

That’s fair enough, Chused.

Also none of us should forget that this case in particular is uniquely difficult because the developer is a devout Muslim and only uses sharia loans. Most other people probably could have already gotten an emergency funding injection by now.

Thailand is a monarchy. I don’t know where you get left wing out of that.

It’s run by the military with the king’s assent. I didn’t say that it’s left wing.

If you’ve been to Thailand you would appreciate how much better things are run here.

The facade of this building is going up quickly: metal framed glass panels bolted to the edge of the concrete formwork slabs. This method of curtain wall construction is much less labor intensive than those solid masonry facades we see currently being built by RAM: 555 West 22nd street comes to mind. This building may turn out to be a very ‘edgy’ modernist condo tower as depicted in the architectural renderings: but so far it is looking a bit like a ‘generic’ glass box. We must wait and see the finished product before anyone know for sure how well this building rates in terms of aesthetics. The functionality will clearly be great: massive windows brings bright natural light to the interior apartments - and expansive views looking out over the city.
