They’re replacing the glass on the crown as well. It’s not visible in my photo, but it is apparent on one of the EarthCam feeds.

I feel like that was sort of always implied that the crown glazing would be replaced, as is visible now the original sort of muted light aqua color of it doesn’t match with the brown tinted glass at all, and the renders always showed an extremely pale white/gray crown.
But I think at some point @baronson had mentioned if there would be integrated lights at the top instead of just uplighting/backlighting the crown, so its still entirely possible they do that with the crown glazing replacement.

Id assume the crown is going to match 270 with an LED screen, like a little brother.

Yeah I’m not actually sure how many colors the current crown can display at the moment. I think what I’m looking for in terms of upgrade is like the ESB. They went from manual floodlights with like 8 colors to a full range of millions of colors with programmable LEDs. I wouldn’t mind the ability to have fading/sweeping animations etc that come with a computerized system. But I think an actual LED screen displaying images like 270 would be a bit much.

I was kind of hoping they’d leave the crown alone, as the turquoise would juxtapose the dark glass in an interesting way.

I remember going into that building for an internship with the now defunct Bear Stearns company. Beautiful building and lobby. I preferred the old facade and loved the crown fully lit at night.

Not gon lie, as much as I love the older facade, the newer facade does make the structure look a lil more futuristic given that it was built the same year I was born ('01). But I understand why folks may not like the newer design. And atleast it still looks better than 262 Fifth Ave.

No doubt the new facade is handsome. Frankly, I think the geometry of the building is so good that it would be hard to screw up (more octagonal skyscrapers please!) It’s just a shame that it comes at the cost of probably the best-executed 90s-era granite facade in the whole city.
Thankfully masonry facades are back in vogue. Maybe in a few years as newer stone towers go up, I won’t miss the old 383 as much I think I will.
