Maybe the reason is that wind can go through there? That’s my perspective of it.
Yes, that one seems like a good guess. That was likely a structural engineering requirement.
It’s unfortunate that these lighting projects take so long. Frankly I think you have to have a decent lighting system if you’re building a modern skyscraper, especially a supertall or megatall. It doesn’t have to be bombastic, it can be subtle. But it has to be decent.
Agreed. I find it quite a dissapointment for tall buildings to be built without good or any noticable nighttime lighting (just look at the NY Times building or some of the residential Hudson Yards towers (15 and 35). Or even look at Lower Manhattan. Plenty of tall buildings with little to no nighttime lighting. Doesn’t need to be dramatic, but simply lit roof areas or crowns and mechanical floor spaces would be enough. It seems night lighting is very low priority on these projects given it took quite a while for the crown to turn on at 1 Manhattan West.
Does this building have a lightning rod or antenna on top?
I don’t about a lightening rod at the top: I can’t see anything that might serve that purpose. I am a bit puzzled by the top section being a ‘see-through’ grid, with the structural steel cross beams on full view.
This building is still a beauty; but the crown seems somewhat unfinished IMHO. A blaring design omission which was probably and engineering requirements for minimizing wind forces that make these tall skinny buildings sway slightly. That has been an issue at 432 Park: this ‘hollow’ crown may be a way to avoid those same type of problems. IDK
So what is the structural height?
" floors 51, 71, and 86 contain windbreaks and are not occupied " It’s probably just a large area to let the wind through.
1,428 ft (435 m) is the height. Which probably doesn’t include the rod or the cleaning machine on top there
Good news for this building! Closings underway, so supply will officially go down!
fingers crossed we’ll start to see the exterior lighting turn on soon!
The view is incredible
