amazing

Tower roofs got an upgrade

I remade the crane on the North Tower’s roof along with the Squidward torture contraption it’s attached to. The giant cheese grater on the south tower’s roof got some tweaks, and the rest of the roof is updated to match the early ‘74 state of construction.

Hang on, from 1973 to 1979 the North Tower had a crane stuck on top? I always thought it was an antenna. What was the purpose of keeping a large crane up there?

I assume from the get-go the purpose was installing a mast, but it was used to dismantle the last kangaroo crane just after it was installed. This is from sometime in mid 1971, and you can see that little truss extension at the base of the future mast is already there too

The yellow squidward torture contraption next to it is the hoist system. This threw me for a loop the first time I saw it, since a lot of derrick operators I’ve seen from the time were many floors below the actual crane and had to rely on a bellman to operate it

And then in 1978 it was used to construct the antenna mast

That I knew about the construction of the antenna. I find it interesting that both towers were constructed with mast bases, imagine both towers with large antennas…then the only way you can tell the difference is floor count and height

I meant like the huge steel seat for the antenna at the tip of the hat truss. The north tower had that added almost immediately, so I think they decided early on that the North Tower would have the antenna. The south tower had the same beefcake hat truss system, but they put up that big elevator block in the middle instead

This shot from 1973

Notice the mast base on 2 WTC

That structure is a freight elevator extension, it’s aligned with the #50 elevator shaft so it’s not in the exact center of the roof. Somewhere online there were a few structural drawings of it. I assume the size of this thing is why there was one kangaroo crane that lingered on the ST roof for a couple years

After most of the roof was constructed and covered over it was partly covered in concrete, but they left the wheel exposed, which was useful to Philippe since he could see the wheel turning when someone was coming up

Probably really late question but where did you find all of the rare singer building photos? Like half the photos I have in my gallery are literally from you. Link if possible?

welcome to the forum and aweee such a cute kitty

Most of my stash is from old books and magazines, some probably from YT vids, a couple Facebook and Twitter posts from old photographers, and about 7 years of spawn camping ebay
