Not to mention the threat of earthquakes that Chicago and other cities don’t have to worry about. However the construction of buildings for earthquake resistances has greatly improved the past couple of decades.

Central LA is one of the most densely populated areas in the country. LA’s Koreatown is nearly twice as large as the Loop, and has a population density nearly twice as high (47,000/sq mile as of the 2008 census, and it’s undoubtedly significantly higher now).

LA absolutely has the density to support many taller buildings over a much larger area than it currently has. Unfortunately, we need to contend with archaic land use patterns and zoning, and insane construction expenses, which continue to spiral out of control before you even factor in seismic safety.
