The new mayor is just horrible.
He really said “more money on Filipino parades, less on housing and culture”
Nothing says progressive like having parades while canceling art museums
The building will still happen. The city is still obligated to follow the terms of the agreement, including the abatement granted in exchange for the space. It will simply have to find a different use for the space.
Hopefully the space will be occupied by a venue that draws people to the area. Maybe a different museum or art space that wasn’t such a financial burden on the city. Jersey City must continue to become a destination city which leads to a vibrant economy. Foot traffic creates jobs.
Mayor announced the Pompidou space will become below-market-rate housing instead. Will be interesting to see how much.
A community center would be great. A place for families with young children to go to, or the elderly to host clubs. There’s no place for public meetings in JSQ at the moment. The JSQCA has to meet at the courtesy of the HCCC.
What I’ve heard now is 60 below-market-rate apartments in phase 2, none in phase 1. Unclear whether there will be a community space, but it will be substantially smaller than the originally proposed pompidou space (100k sq ft)
