I went to college in St Louis in the '90’s. Downtown was deserted, but there was still a clear sense of what a beautiful area it once was. I saw a lot of landmark worthy buildings that owners were trying to demolish thorough active neglect. I haven’t been there in 25 years, I hope things have turned around a bit.

JB–I haven’t been there in a few years, but there are quite a few construction projects going on in the downtown area and around the Cardinals ball park. And there are more plans afoot You are right that the place still shows signs of its once vibrant self. But the population still is declining and the north side still is a mess. The central west end is lively and the south side has areas of life. East St. Louis is a shell, much like Camden is to Philly. Did you go to Washington University? Our younger son went there.

I did go to Wash U. The campus has changed a lot since my time there, most notably with the metro link being opened. I’d love an excuse to visit the place. When was your son there?

He graduated in the early 2000s.

Also known as “steel trees”, these glossy silver tridents provided the exterior framework of the Twin Towers. I wish there were a tower or development that could redevelop the aesthetic of these steel tridents, in tribute. source: Reddit.

Isn’t there not one but two different buildings designed with the same steel tree design

Would it have been possible to give the old Twin Towers a complete new facade?

The original verticals in the façade were structural and wouldn’t have been able to be removed. You could maybe hide them in a layer of spandrel glass to mimic the look of that rendering, but from the interior it would look the same with the vertical elements making it not really worth it. Idk I really liked the look of facade on the originals.

When the Pabst Hotel was demolished in November of 1902, it was the first building supported by a steel structure to be fully demolished.

Would be very cool to see the towers rebuilt in a modern skyline

They would have to be at least 500-600 feet taller.
