Didn’t realize this boondoggle of boondoggles also involves tearing down acres of forest for a museum and auditorium complex with parking lots.
But people against this thing will be criticized for being anti-patriotic and against the flag. The developer made a lot of money off of patriotism. They probably envision an endless source of revenue here.
Good read on the Flagpole controversy in Maine - thanks.
I recall from grade school history lessons the following poetic refrain: In 1492 Cristopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
They needed to add only 31 feet to that pole for the symbolic reference to the year America was discovered.
Excerpt from article - “The project — called the Flagpole of Freedom Park — would include a flagpole that would be 1,461 feet tall, surpassing the Empire State Building, with elevators bringing people to observation decks where they could see clear to Canada. A massive American flag bigger than a football field would be atop it.”.
Setting the total height of a building to some arbitrary number for some ‘symbolic’ reason seems a foolish gesture; buildings need a more practical utilitarian bases for the total height.
This flag pole being set at a total height of 1776 feet tall makes perfect sense for the Sacred Symbol that is the American flag. I am impressed by the patriotic symbolism of this project: something much needed in my life, as well as the lives of my fellow patriots. God bless America.
Preserving some remaining natural land for Americans to enjoy in the future is much needed too. Put this thing somewhere where there are already buildings and other man-made objects, and everyone can be happy. That includes people who can feel patriotic without the need to tell everyone they’re “patriots.”
You’re joking right? Dang that’s crazy. It’s not like we don’t have dozens of national parks, nature reserves, millions of sq miles of forests and land set aside for that exact reason.
Of course I’m not joking, and I’m pretty sure you know that. At 1,776 feet tall, this thing would be visible from anywhere within about a 625 square mile area within a 25 mile radius. And who would they be trying to show it to? The population in that area is small. But with this it would be inundated with jingoistic tourists. As I said, I’m all for building this thing if it would psychologically help people who need that sort of thing to feel better about themselves, but in the middle of pristine forest land is not the right place.
Yea this idea went about as far as I expected it to go. Glad it’s finally done.
If the billionaires behind this are still looking for ways to honor veterans, maybe they can donate to wounded warrior or something? You know…something that would actually benefit veterans.
The VA Hospital system could use his money. There are many thousands of wounded service members who could use better healthcare. I assume he’s the kind of guy who would whine if his high bracket income taxes went up 1/4% to fund the VA system, so maybe he could donate the money and use it as a tax write-off. It certainly would be a much better way to honor veterans and active service personnel than erecting a jingoistic giant flagpole in the middle of the pristine woods.
