St. Louis has a secondary airport on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River. There is only one airline and only a few flights a day. The airport has a huge parking lot, and parking costs $9 per day. Car ownership in this part of Illinois is nearly universal.
This is all very wasteful, as St Louis is much too small to have two airports, and in any case this airport is very far from where most folks live, which is on the Missouri side. It truly is the “fleecing of America.”
Amazingly, they are now extending St Louis’ light rail system to this airport. The light rail already serves St Louis’ main airport (Lambert). This is almost certainly the most unnecessary rail project in the US in the last half-century. I can’t imagine it will get more than half a dozen passengers per month.
Just to add to the ridiculous nature of this all, the rail station will be across the parking lot from the terminal. In this image, the rail station is at the top, and the airport terminal is at the bottom. Why would anyone take the train?
