Upon completion, The Pomp will feature 1.3 million square feet of retail and entertainment space, as well as 4,000 residential units, two hotels and approximately 1.4 million square feet of office space. The project will include the existing Harrah’s Pompano Beach casino, which is owned by Caesars.
Cordish’s Live! brand will anchor the development’s entertainment and dining component. Called Live! at The Pomp, the brand will offer more than 25,000 square feet of food-and-beverage venues, including a Sports & Social and PBR Cowboy Bar.
Initially I wasn’t necessarily very excited by this plan. The site is on the Tri-rail line, but over a mile from the nearest station. It’s currently only directly served by a single bus line. And there isn’t really any other walkable urbanism nearby to connect it to anyway; just roads, big box stores, SFHs and golf courses as far as the eye can see.
But it looks like Pompano Beach is trying to change their tune: there is currently no “downtown” to speak of, but they’re hoping to build one less than a mile from this site.
It’s a shame that South Florida is only building up now because they now have no more room to sprawl. But it’s better than it staying exclusively sprawl forever. Hopefully this heralds smarter land use in the future.
Agreed. I’m visiting here for the first time in years after periodically visiting here for the past 40+ years. The Pomp development site was a unique opportunity centered around the real estate presented by the old harness track, and the existing casino. Ideally situated, no. But as a development opportunity, it could hardly have been better. One thing Pompano has lacked that other nearby towns that developed later is vibrant, centralized, mixed use centers. It seems like they’re had at work at reversing that. I’m hoping to check out the progress of the Pomp, Downtown and Old Town developments before I head home. Maybe some more YIMBY Pompano topics to come?
