NYC Underground

That Jamaica station needed it. First thing many people see coming into NYC from JFK.

Honestly it still looks dumpy. It needs a comprehensive renovation and modernizarion like many other stations have received.

While the money from congestion pricing will go to capital projects, hopefully that means money from other sources is freed up for maintenance

Sad as it is only 36 years old. Should not be this bad.

The NY subway is truly the Dolly Parton of rapid transit.

Lets be honest those finishes just don’t look like they age well.

They looked terrible 15 years ago as well.

Personally, Jamaica-van Wyck is the best out of the bunch being the least ugly and even had windows that made it less of a dungeon. The rest (including renovations of older, existing stations) during that era are ugly.

The individual that the media refers to as the “governor” had nothing to do with this.

Does anyone know why the individual’s name is on the press release?

Probably for the same reason she wore an MTA tshirt for the pride march last Sunday. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

those MTA shirts are good for congestion

The MTA is a state organization and as such, the governor is a sort of head of the MTA. She names a large portion of MTA board members and appoints the Chair and CEO of the MTA.

The G train modernization is well underway.

The northern portion of the G is expected to resume service soon as upgrades there will be completed soon with work moving to the southern half of the line.

Painting the barriers black made a whole world of a difference. Black also hides the grime better than yellow used in the original installations.

What would be even better is if they were made of glass instead of metal and if they extended all the way across the entire platform instead of having gaps for train doors.

I think they also need to be C shaped to close off the front portion on the yellow strip because then people will still get stuck on the opposite side of the barrier.

People at Gothamist are saying we can’t have continuous walls with doors because we have a few different car models with dissimilar door configurations.

That’s what the vertical style is for. Paris and Barcelona have the same problem, and have (at least) tested the vertical ones.

Somehow I feel if these barriers were to be glass (while aesthetically pleasing) they would be vandalized.
