NEW YORK | The Spiral (66 Hudson Blvd) | 1,040 FT | 66 FLOORS

The spiral looks beautiful

Nice rendering, as always from our guy Sin.Art.

But I’ve got to say the overall effect of the HY is less exciting than you’d expect from a cluster of super-and-near-supertall towers. It reminds me as a less gaudy version of the Dubai Marina: a bunch of towers which might individually be impressive, but because they’re all within a few hundred feet of one another’s height, and packed so closely together, look like one big… mound.

Some intermediate-height towers rising to the north and west may help mitigate the effect by ramping up gradually towards the peak (such as it is) of 30 HY, rather than the sudden fall-off that contributes to the mesa effect. But what the HY is really missing is peaks and valleys. Imagine how much more dramatic it would be if for instance you could lop 100-200 from 50 HY and add it to 30 HY and The Spiral. The core is what it is, but I’m hopeful for some more variation going forward.

it’ll look much better once Hudson Boulevard is built out. Hudson 36 is a good measure for things to come, but most will probably measure in 100-200ft higher or more.

I actually agree with the cluster part, many towers get hidden and I don’t like that. But knowing they’d expand I knew it would happen. At least 50 HY will be blocked from Jersey

21/66, 32% over 360 feet tall
We now have one full spiral around the tower

The glass is looking good so far.

Boy am I getting tired of all glass buildings. Hudson Yards has way too many of them. The area as a whole lacks architectural pizzazz despite all the variety of shapes and glass colors.

I’ll admit I’m getting “glass fatigue” as well. I like many of the buildings individually, but the ocean of blue glass is starting to look like a house of mirrors

Phase 2 better have brick, limestone, precast, terracotta, steel, anything other than mostly glass facades.

Unfortunately even the phase 2 deck hasn’t been approved so we could be speculating for a lot longer than the 2024 date promised.

And they’re still in conceptual stages

I think one concept many years ago was to have the 2 towers across from 15HY- to be designed by RAMSA. So that would at least be all limestone if they keep them on for the actual design.

Makes me wonder what’s going on with 50 HY, whose foundation was complete a month before they even finished digging out the Spiral.

I thought 50 HY would rise like 1 MW and top out 3 months before this and it looks like the reverse might be true.

Wasn’t there some kind of accident at 50? DOB usually puts in a stop order.
