Today’s update:
Nice closeups! I didn’t realize there were so many openings/doorways on the east side since they’re never depicted in renders or plans, I only knew of the elevator being on that side.
They’re probably exit only fire doors that will look flush on the outside, sort of like 1WTC next door
Mm, good point, there are fire stairs and an elevator on the corner so thats probable. I guess it could also be additional fire exits to parts of the VSC. I just completely forgot what that side looked like since it’s been so long since the camera ontop of the Millennium Hilton went offline.
I hope they do a better job than the Saint Nicholas church on the opposite side…
Oh wow. That’s not at all what I expected for the lobby, but I kind of love it!
It’s actually turning out the same as the renders (amazingly), that particular view isn’t the lobby exactly but that same lighting motif carries into part of the lobby (which is at the extreme back of the photo). This would be taken from the back of the building where the terrace is looking towards the memorial. The majority of the lighting in the lobby will be similar but it will just be parallel slats, the adjacent space of which is the continuation of the previous image’s lighting scheme (which can also be seen in the extreme background).
This is partially visible in the render, the right side of the lobby is what is in the background of the photo Alemel posted.
Very Westworld.
There was a hint of the design on the renderings, but the reality is far more striking!
A weird case of reality beating the renderings.
What company provided the marble work? I’m sure its totally unrelated, but in Cherry Hill, NJ there’s a company called Ilkem Marble and Granite, and their painted marble pattern on the facade of the building looks JUST LIKE the marble patterns on this building. I’ll have to try and get a pic sometime
@Alemel I don’t think it looks that striking, I get a sort of too extreme sense from the material, not necessarily the lighting though because the render makes it look like the track is wood but the actual product makes it look like rusted metal. it’s visibly dirty (I think) but it doesn’t look like wood. That render is also of the side lobby area I was mentioning in the render I posted lol.
@TK2000 The marble came from Portugal/was supplied and fabricated by a Portuguese company, LSI.
Anyone else thing that the slaps could have been bigger?
4 of those panels could have made up one slab now that I look at it.
Even though the facade panels are laminated, smaller panels allows for less deflection and potential to crack in both the glass and marble. Each panel is 5’x12’ and each piece of marble is 5’x3’, a panel that is double the size at 10’x6’ would have a lot of deflection in marble that is already very thin.
Does the thickness matter as much when its double laminated though?
Yes, it definitely does, because the glass lamination isn’t necessarily there for strength its there to prevent moisture from coming into contact with the marble that overtime would make it warp. And the thickness of the marble itself (1/2") was determined because anything thicker could have actually caused the lamination to come apart due to the stone contracting.
So if you had a larger panel, it would need to be thicker overall or more laminated which would increase the overall weight while also making it potentially possible that the panels would come apart and the deflection of the piece far greater.
Lots of stuff happening
A large number of irregularly shaped base panels are waiting to be installed, either for the south vertical face or it’s slanted counterpart which has been waterproofed. The left side base cladding has progressed and more support channels have been installed on both sides of the stairs.
A long narrow strip of concrete was poured a few days ago on the west plaza, demarkating the boundary and future height of it. But it looks like paver installation could start at any moment.
The right side has been brought to grade and looks to be preparing for the concrete underlayment but it’s been hard to tell or even predict if this portion will have an underlayment. But outside of that thought, planter holes are visible along the bollard line.
I can’t wait until those sidewalks are complete and when they take the fences down. Does anyone know what month they plan on opening?
I’m interested to see if they do anything with Greenwich in front of 2 WTC or if they will leave it as is. Seems odd not to just finally complete the entire road along with the PAC and then fence parts off once construction resumes. Hopefully in our lifetimes.
