NEW YORK | Penn Station Expansion/Improvements

Is this the corner with 7th ave?

Indeed!

I think the only thing that bothers me is the clash with the 7th Ave side. I wish Penn 2 and the entrance on that side had the same stylistic treatment.

I do find it funny that Moynihan Train hall has a more historic facade but internally looks more modern than what will be going on across the street. I prefer the look of what’s to come for Penn on the inside.

All this to say I wish there was a unified language both externally and internally from 7th to 9th Ave. but I suppose this is the best we can do with so many different stakeholders.

8th Ave

I think it would be great if they could bring back the underground walkway between Penn Sta and the Herald Square subway lines (and the PATH)..

It was closed in 1991 (or possibly 1986?) - But either way, it’s really silly to have to exit Penn Station, walk a block and then go back underground. It wastes time and ruins the feeling of interconnectivity.

I noticed yet another change with this proposal: The NJT entrance by 2 Penn is going to be replaced and will match the existing entrance at the middle of 2 Penn.

I applaud the consistency there. If 7th Ave is going to look modern, make it all match.

Never in my lifetime did I think I’d see Penn Station come back (somewhat) from the dead. All my life it’s been a shit hole basement. This is magnificent. Is it perfect? Hell no. Is it a great compromise? Absolutely.

Between the LGA revamp, new PABT underway, 2WTC moving forward, JFK construction, Gateway Tunnel actually getting built, and the supposed completion of construction on the Van Wyck later this year (we’ll believe it when we see it for that one), there is a lot of stuff happening that would make a time traveler from 2014 pinch themselves.

I think about this everyday… also including the 2nd Ave subway extension starting, new soccer stadium and Willets Point transformation with swanky casinos… The infrastructural transformation going on in New York right now is just incredible. And then the proliferation of supertalls that hopefully start this year.

New York is ALIVE and pushing ahead into the 21st century!

You forgot the New Portal Bridge which will be complete by this fall. That alone will end a significant cause of delays for train riders going into and out of NY. There truly is a lot of transformational work going on in the transportation realm of NY and exciting to see all these projects advance.

They still haven’t really said how they are going to pay for this

Took me a while to figure out what this reminded me of. A late 90s, 2000s era federal building.

I’m assuming they will float bonds.

If you zoom in you can see the elevator matches the others in the renderings.

Will all the areas match? Right now NJ Transit looks one way, the LIRR concourses another and the former Amtrak areas have another look? Is this just the former Amtrak concourses and the NJ Transit areas?

Looking at the 7th ave entrance even though the outside matches Penn 2 the interior does match the new design.

Am I the only one who thinks this will go the way of “Infrastructure Week” and the 50-year mortgage?

Yeah this I’m not sure of. Would Skanska and Halmar even sign on though if it had no intention of moving forward? The former has already worked on renovation efforts (LIRR) in Penn already.

Underground, everything except the recently renovated LIRR concourse & Moynihan will be renovated and unified in appearance. You can see it illustrated in the image below, taken approximately where the NJ transit concourse is today, looking North to the LIRR Concourse off in the distance (Which looks like it does today)

If I recall correctly, you currently have to take an escalator down to the LIRR concourse from the NJ Transit/former Amtrak areas. Looking at this, it would appear that the whole single level complex would be equal with the LIRR level
