NEW YORK | Penn Station Expansion/Improvements

MSG needs two city blocks in width, Hotel Penn site is only 1 block and also does not have enough depth length wise.

Only the eastern most portion of the PABT could potentially accommodate an arena, but even then the 2 towers are scheduled to be built above that area so that rules it out.

Hotel Penn Site would have to be merged with the mostly Vornado-owned retail block from 33-34th, and that stretch of 33rd demapped. It has some challenges, but it is a clear and good site all things considered. The best thing it has going for it is it maintains connection to NJTransit/LIRR which is principle for the MSG company.

My old suggestion for this topic:

If you move the Hulu Theater, you could build a new main entrance to Penn here.

Even if this is shown incorrectly, the station would still have a side entrance on both sides. The MSG needs a renovation of the façade, as well as an optimal roof garden as an “after sports area”. And if Southern Penn is to come, the southern block could be demolished to create a light-filled space to let in enough sunlight. Tower Site 2A/2B are to become two twins with 900feet.

My concept of a new Penn in New York in the 21st century, we are not brewing neoclassicism but a Penn that looks to the future.

oh they were serious about this version

Oh god. This is probably one of the worse ones since you’re deleting MSG and it still is a basement and you’re putting context-less columns all over 2 Penn.

Honestly, a Stern designed new construction would be something delightful that fits the bill of “classically designed” while also being modern and new.

Does this plan preserve the Felt Forum?

This is just that awful Grand Penn plan but stripped down…what a colossal waste of money it would be to move MSG and leave most of it open.

I’m a fan of whatever that big map graphic is.

Reminds me of what Laguardia used to look like. It’s still so dark in there.

Actually, I like it from these renderings much better than the video. I like the tall windows and the tunnels to Moynihan. I also really like the park and redesign of MSG. I still think they should move it, but this is the best looking option I have seen for keeping it.

Good lord. Absolutely awful.

I am thoroughly impressed that one of the worst Penn proposals has got so much media hype and spotlight. There are many better proposals that even keep MSG that aren’t this halfassed in design. If they want to go the traditional design of Penn just at this point build the entire half that sits where MSG is and it’ll be more well-thought out and not just keeping Penn an eternal basement.
