Oh yeah I forgot. They also are doing the Brooklyn Tower, which is absolutely amazing in its own right.
I like it.
Since this project is nearby, I hope they raze or revamp this 1-block long plethora of filth on 34th. Especially considering it’s a stones throw away from the LIRR (which is, as we all know, being redeveloped.) I wonder if this side of the block has been eyed on before in the past for redevelopment?
It looks like something that dispenses sandwiches.
I know it’s all in the eyes of the beholder, but imo this is quite an ugly building. I probably would feel better if both the south and north face of the building looked the same. A 1200 foot blank wall facing north midtown isn’t gonna look good, not even with the little notches they have as windows. Its bulky with a flat bland looking rooftop standing mere blocks away from the elegant ESB. Hopefully overtime the design is refined and it grows on me.
Love it. I built all sorts of stuff with an Erector Set as a kid and, when sick in bed, as a young adult. My mother in law actually gave me a set when I was laid up. Laughs all around.
The base is actually amazing to me and I love the street presence it has. My issue with it is that the rest of the building is literally just “”
It’s not as terrible as lots of people make it out to be but it could definitely be waaay better.
So Penn 15 obviously is a go, the towers next to Penn 1 is next. Gimbels site not really sure yet, I hope they don’t demolish that site. I rather have the Gimbels building saved than hotel Penn. Hotel Penn yeah it’s sad to see that go but the building was not in great shape and it’s one of many reasons why it’s getting demolished. We are getting a nice super tall even tho it’s an odd design it could be worse. Material will be on point. The proposed sites south of MSG a lot of disagreements with financial and the proposed Penn station itself plus the fight with the people who want to save the block.
This is Busy Bee’s thoughts on the Gimbels site:
Yeah, I’m not a fan of demolishing the Gimbels Building. It was designed by Daniel Burnham and besides having an obvious abundance of local history, has an interior atrium, that even though enduring hokey modernizations over the years, could really be made impressive again with an top to bottom restoration of the building with modernist elements. I would be in complete support of a Macy’s approach where a tower rises from the historic structure and with a full vacating of Manhattan Mall as we have now seen in all it’s pathetic glory, that would create the opportunity for a total gut rehabilitation, both inside and an exterior restoration, along with dramatically improved transit connections, while facilitating the necessary load structure to run through the building to support an impressive tower above. Win-Win.
Here’s what NYguy commented on about it:
Just another note on that residential alternative for site 8 (Manhattan Mall), while not a full design, this graphic is an indication that Vornado could opt to build a residential tower on top of (through) the current building, similar to what Macy’s has planned for its new tower.
It looks like it’s secretly designed to one day start moving over and slowly envelope the Empire State Building, holding it ransom until we meet its demands.
Ha! In San Francisco, 555 California is sometimes known as “the box the Transamerica Pyramid came in.” Penn 15 could definitely be “the reinforced shipping container the ESB came in.”
Per NYguy:
More updated renderings. It appears they have done away with the lowrise wing, creating something more fitting for the streetwall. It remains a work in progress.
I’m getting a Blade Runner/noir vibe from this one.
Geez. These people in the comments still think that glass skyscrapers like this one will stay empty when it’s completed.
