Very Clickbait Title:
…The 100-year-old cruise operator said the financial filing will not affect NYC Ferry service. The company’s contract with the city to run the system was renewed for another five years in 2023.
The bankruptcy specifically pertains to just one of Hornblower’s smaller lines – American Queen Voyages, an overnight riverboat cruise business that ceased operations on Tuesday, pending a sale or a shutdown. Hornblower said that American Queen Voyages was lagging in performance, and had not been able to bounce back after the pandemic.
“This will not affect NYC Ferry service whatsoever – in fact, this deal injects new capital into the parent company, while eliminating debt unrelated to ferry operations, which will allow the system to continue its record growth across the five boroughs,” said Hornblower CEO Kevin Rabbitt…
That just makes sense. Weird that they don’t already have that connection
That connection exists, but only in bus form. There are several bus routes that cross the Verrazano Bridge.
A ferry from Staten Island to Brooklyn is unlikely to attract a lot of ridership.
Just curious what your thoughts are there. The article you linked was giving examples suggesting it’s a highly desired route for ferry, which seems like it would make the trip in less time than a bus.
I agree that for folks travelling between Saint George and Bay Ridge a ferry would be much faster than a bus. But other than anecdotal evidence the article didn’t cite any evidence that there is serious demand for such a route. The Staten Island end of such a route is a hub for buses and rail, so it would definitely be a ridership generator, but the Bay Ridge end is not particularly close to anything, does not have parking and is an 18-minute walk from the nearest subway station. The buses across Verrazano Bridge collect passengers at various parts of Staten Island and drop them off right at the subway. The ferry would need to compete with that.
I suppose they’ll need to do studies to see if there is legitimate demand for this.
I see what you’re saying about the BK side of the route. It’ll be interesting to see if there’s enough demand going the other way.
i agree that a single SG-BR route would probably be under utilized, but integrating that route with the other east river lines would make some sense. being able to go from staten island to brooklyn, and up to LIC would help to better link the outer boroughs
Update on proposed Carteret-NYC ferry
Unfortunately no updates on proposed Elizabeth-NYC ferry. But they still have a website, so maybe hope is not lost just yet.
Yikes $28 round trip!
If the IBX ever gets built a St. George to Bay Ridge terminus of the IBX makes perfect sense. Gives Staten Island residents a quick trip over for easy access to all of BK/ Queens
