NEW YORK | Madison Square Garden

Current license expires in July. Will be an interesting summer for sure. They have filed for renewal already.

See, I don’t think any of the current plans for replacement are worth a crap. I say renew the permit on condition of removal of the lower theater, take the easy dub in lighting conditions and at least entrance quality and keep the rangers in the city. Hudson Yards phase 2 doesn’t need an arena or casino kitching things up. Eat the paste for another 10 years with MSG and plan something better in the long term.

I very much agree with this, all the fuss about replacing MSG has not produced anything that would actually resolve many of the issues that actually relate to Penn Station itself and those issues are already being remediated with the current plans and construction. If anything the remove MSG folks are just replacing it with nothing and still covering the land not to mention that they want to tear down a completely new 2 PENN.

The Hulu theater just needs to go as you said because that is what is in the way, not the arena itself, which is actually located about halfway up the inside of the building.

I don’t think the resort proposal at HY Phase II would be kitshy at all, but another theater could very well be built there to replace the Hulu theater if need be. I don’t know why this has not yet been proposed.

Exactly. A larger theater just between Javits and phase 2. Where the northern end of the high line is now, just straighten it out from 33rd up the eastern side of the west side highway to connect directly to Javits, run all the way east down either side of 34th street and back down the west side of 11th avenue. Then, use the whole rest of the block to build a theater larger and better than the one currently at MSG, framed by a couple large high-rises on either side.

Still, holding a potential termination over Dolan’s head every 10 years keeps his skin in the game, so he will be forced to actually make improvements from time to time.

No, it really doesn’t. As you can see by the way he has acted since the permit was last given, with the intent that he would find somewhere to move. Which he hasn’t even thought about. And regardless this newest renewal is supposed to be permanent, so the 10 years thing doesn’t matter.

I don’t know, I guess I’m just optimistic.

However, MSG Executive Vice President Joel Fisher was quick to point out that no such feasible plan exists, and that the Garden has no current plans to relocate.

Main premise of the article for those that don’t want to read it.

Yes, no plan exists because you haven’t made it yet. That’s not the city’s problem. That’s your job that you should’ve started working on a decade ago when they refused to extend your permit perpetually. My god just go to Hudson Yards, it really isn’t that far away from Penn Station

The main premise is that the Dolans are finally conceding that they might have to move. If the City plays hardball and lets the operating permit expire, Dolan’s teams will have to move to another arena in the area.

And it sounds like they would expect a massive handout. Absolutely not.

8.5 Billion in public money for a private stadium? No thank you. Unless of course they plan to give the city portion of control or ownership of the new venture.

They have no right to expect anything. When the OP expires, MSG will be a white elephant.

They should have moved when the Farley was an option. Hopefully the state can use eminent domain on the theater.

There are other places for them to go.

This is the crappiest arena in pro sports.
