this is what one would expect in a third world country like North Macedonia but certainly not in the greatest city in the multiverse
What exactly is wrong with it? These would be perfectly fine terminals in London or Hong Kong and theyâre welcome additions to our airport.
yet you canât find anything as pedestrian in London or Hong Kong ![]()
Big news for JetBlue customers at JFK. The airline has announced that its first lounge, the BlueHouse, is coming to JFK on December 18th, and in 2026, Boston will be next.
Beautiful lounge.
Did they design the xray machines to look like plane engines? Thatâs cool.
Those are new CT scanner type ones. They have them at Newark and theyâre great since you dont need to empty your entire luggage out at the checkpoint.
Those are quickly becoming standard at US airports. Some airports have had them for years.
I see theyâve taken to covering up the manufacturer logo with an obnoxiously large TSA sticker. I guess they got tired of people snickering at the name âAnalogicâ.
Those machines scan in 3D. As a result, you can leave things (like liquids and laptops) in your bags that you previously had to remove. That can speed things along.
But, depending on the human operator, they can also slow things down because now the operator has a fancy 3D model of each bag to spin around and inspect from all angles.
It looks like theyâre also installing the fancy new system where nearly all movement of the bins is automated, in both directions (instead of just a one-way belt). Itâs very handy to have the five (or so) stations where people can load bins at the same time.
This will come in clutch when I come back (and depart) next year.
They should be (hopefully) ready by the summer. Weâre at a race to the finish with the terminals as interior fitment is underway.
If your flightâs in the winter or spring you might miss out on being one of the first to use the new terminals.
Human operators? Good think DHS has a union.
- Aviation Security: Analogicâs ConneCT and SeleCT CT systems for airport checkpoints and checked baggage use AI-based detection algorithms to identify explosives, prohibited items, and contraband. This technology aims to improve security threat detection, reduce false alarms, and increase passenger throughput by allowing liquids and electronics to remain in carry-on bags.
Relying on AI is not a good idea, as thereâs been a case where AI misidentified a musical instrument as a weapon, triggering a lockdown in a school. While that implementation is different, it is important to have people who can verify whether a threat is present and that AI is far from perfect.
Because of this, I can see that âAI-basedâ detection may lead to false positives unless a human operator is present to manually verify that weapons or dangerous items are present.
I wholeheartedly agree w/human in the loop. A year from now after the humans have trained the model to near perfection there will be some other threat to worry about.
EDIT: @ALC11 case in point for human in the loop: How surveillance tech and and the 'Reddit Detective Agency' helped hunt a killer
But the latest artificial-intelligence-powered surveillance was of little use in the early search for a gunman who walked away from the Brown campus after the shooting and slipped unnoticed into the surrounding neighborhoods of Providence, R.I. He evaded detection for days, using a hard-to-trace phone, avoiding facial recognition software by obscuring his face with a medical-type mask, and switching the license plates on his rental car.
The PANYNJ has posted some T6 photos on flickr. The air-side areas are coming along great. Still no jetbridges yet.
Looks like the apron is almost right up to the terminalâs airside frontage. I think once paving is finished weâll see the jetbridges being installed. Itâs interesting to see how the two terminals are hitting different milestones at such different times, with T1âs jetbridge installation starting much earlier and, to my knowledge, just about done.
I wish, but honestly, we donât know yet. Will keep my eye out!
Most likely not. Youâre asking too much from the Port Authority. I wish they would get some though for this and T1.
Do you know something we donât? This makes me think that theyâre considering it⌠![]()
I wishâŚyet againđ Considering how both the design and construction of T1 and T6 has been coordinated together by companies like Mott MacDonald, HNTB, and Grimshaw (despite different developers), I feel like we wouldâve seen both terminalâs bridges start to arrive roughly around the same time if they had intended to use the same sort of opaque bridges (pure speculation).
