NEW YORK | JFK Airport Renovation/Upgrades

Another perspective on the new T5 exit roads. Apparently the roof of the customs/international baggage hall below was actually designed to support vehicle traffic–some real impressive forward thinking by the design team from over a decade ago! I saw confirmation that the road is a few weeks from opening, indicating this area of the project will get priority so it opens by year end.

The PA’s next capital plan’s got quite a bit packed in! In addition to an “overhauled Airtrain JFK,” we’ve got:

A new Terminal A at LGA, PATH service increase, and a buildout of 2 and 5 WTC, among other things.

Upon further investigation, it looks like the Airtrain JFK overhaul includes a new fleet of trains with doubled capacity, as well as rebuilt stations. About time!

They probably won’t be pouring money into T2+T5 beyond a few millions in cuts and subsidies, but interesting!

Will they ever expand transit options at LGA other than the bus? Probably not. I am pretty excited to see what a new Terminal A would look like and whether it would incorporate the old Seaplane Terminal that the existing A uses.

Some highlights from the capital plan documents:

An LGA Terminal B/C connector is not dead.

There is a hint of another JFK Terminal being planned: A new Terminal 9. This is something to keep an eye out on.

It also seems JFK is eyeballing establishing a CONRAC (much like EWR) to consolidate rental car operations and along with another phase of redevelopment.

I’m also glad they’re finally going to consider renovating the JFK AirTrain stations. They’re dated and do not match the great new terminals that are being built.

At EWR, there is plans to expand the north and south gates at Terminal A as well, adding an unknown amount of gates.

Where will they even build a 9th terminal :wilted_flower:

Phase 2?? Terminal 9??? So much is happening! I’m very excited to see where this goes.

I have to imagine this will involve a deeper redevelopment of Terminal 4. As for Terminal 9, the only place I can see that going is in the space where Terminal 8 phase 3 should’ve gone. Either that, or they’ll build a headhouse in the center of the CTA and connect it to a satellite concourse (likely between the north-south runways) by train.

At that point they’d be better off nuking all the terminals and consolidating everything to a central headhouse and building satellites.

There’s no way they’re fitting another terminal next to T8.

I’m afraid that’s already been tried😂image from Pei Cobb Freed + Partners

You’re probably right about the T8 space

I just found some fresh new looks at some interior ceiling progress at JFK T1 on LinkedIn.

And here’s a slightly older look at some T1 departures and other areas.

The ceiling has been a bit of a disappointment. Looks very generic. I hope the art makes up for it.

That’s the JFK 2000 plan, where did you find that? They supposedly did dig the tunnels for the baggage.

Ok I’m loving that customs hall ceiling. Way better than those early renders! Great find.

T1’s departures hall floors are going in, while T6’s baggage carousels are being installed.

Where did you get these pics from ?

LinkedIn. If you know the right keywords when searching, you’ll find stuff posted from people other than the PA such as contractors.

Interesting. I cannot find it here.

Not all the stuff is posted by the PA. I found the images I posted from contractors. Not sure where BA178 got his from.

I got these from the JFK redevelopment quarterly newsletter, the latest of which came out today.

I was at JFK yesterday, and it was remarkable to see the progress for T1 & T6.

For some reason T8 & T4 still look and feel mediocre despite billions being spent on them.

Plenty of updates via LinkedIn.

Interior lights are on, and more ceiling and interior work is taking place. One of T1’s contractors, Raiden Electric, has shown off what they’re doing.

I also found a pair of cool panoramas of T6. One can see how much progress has been made within the past year.
