NEW YORK | JFK Airport Renovation/Upgrades

Fun fact: While the first two images are obviously the main headhouse, the last image is in the baggage claim, and the image above it appears to be the passport control/customs area, which seems to have undergone some revisions with the design since the renders were released.

You’re correct, the PA still throws these old renderings around despite newer ones being available, such as the ones below. The changes to the baggage claim area appear relatively minor, compared with those in the immigration hall.

T7’s old departures access road has been demolished. I drove the new route myself last week, but was unable to take pictures; the new routing is along the old outer departures curb in the opposite direction. More progress on T6’s departures roadway is also observable, with curving I-beams guiding the road from the phase 1 to phase 2 curbside areas. I believe the torn-down concrete and steel will be recycled, perhaps even on this very project thanks to the on-site concrete mixing plant set up over on the west side of the airport.

Yet, the girders keep coming.

There’s nice progress of the cladding of the front of T6 and the columns visible in that photo, as it seems that about one-third of it has been completed.

Funny but the words in hebrew don’t translate to anything. I wonder if the arabic and chinese add up to something lol

That has to be the shiniest girder I’ve ever seen.

Here’s a new piece on the JFK T1 project. Lots of photos and updates. It seems like the photos featured here are the same ones @pSL1988 shared not too long ago.

Does anyone know if the gyp finish on the tree columns in Terminal 1 is the final finish? Im relatively surprised they are just being finished in gyp if that’s the case.

Would’ve been nice to have seen some AESS for these.

I don’t think exposed steel is being used here, as the actual shape of the structural element differs strongly from the curved profile of the finished columns. Since gypsum is used for the curved area, I believe it will clad the rest of the column for continuity.

If you want to know what PANYNJ cares about, its paint on steel.

Here’s another article showing off the current status of the JFK Terminal 1 project and provides additional confirmation of a June 2026 opening date:

It seems like a number of the columns have been covered and are starting to receive paint, and work on the actual ceiling is now starting.

In addition, a concession company, WHSmith North America, has announced that they are going to operate 6 different retail spaces in T1.

The LONG THANH International Airport in Vietnam looks amazing. T-6 design seems rather mediocre. I hope that i am wrong. Terminal 1 has the potential to be amazing.

I think it’s too early to judge T6 since it isn’t fully built yet. But at the same time, its design is less ambitious than T1, which is going to essentially become JFK’s “flagship” terminal.

Then again, are you surprised? The PA isn’t exactly known for bold, daring designs. Mediocrity is the game here.

Yup, I hope T-6 is good enough, and that will be fine with me. I am not expecting Changi or Hamad airport here. I just hope it is LGA good, and that will be amazing. Same team, so lets see.

More cool stuff from JFK T1 was shared on their LinkedIn:

They’re actively testing the baggage handling system to ensure everyone’s bags make it to where they need to go. They have allegedly tested close to 24,000 bags so far.
