this is not a real proposal. i think we should point this out before anyone gets excited. Imagine the hubris it takes to propose something for a project site that you have nothing to do with or own/lease.

~$300M is all well and good, but Gateway will cost $20-25B by the time its completed.
That probably doesn’t include the cost of refurbishing the North River tunnels in the years after Gateway is completed.
Chris Christie might be infamous for the George Washington Bridge incident, but cancelling the ARC 12 years ago might have been more costly…like a mini-Brexit for the NYC area.
I worry that most of Phase 2 won’t even start construction until 2030 or later, even if the casino here was approved.

Aside from the “complete” estimate of the overall Gateway project, the $300 million is only for the rest of the tunnel that runs under the Hudson Yards platforms, so it doesn’t really matter how much the overall cost of the project is so long as this portion is completed because, as it relates to HY, trying to build the tunnel after the platform is completed would be more difficult and costly.
As it relates to the overall development of Phase II, Related has said in many press releases relating to the casino that it would help spur the rest of development at Phase II because it would get the west platform construction going, which is one of the main construction hurdles right now.

I don’t think it will immediately fast track it more than having it be the chosen site for the casino resort, but it will certainly be easier to build/less costly then if Phase II was already under construction and the platform built. What is preventing commencement of Phase II is the approvals for the west platform to begin construction as it’s been constantly delayed for a number of years now.

They are definitely nice renders that show what the plan for the deck was but in general, I’d assume they were never really circulated because there was no definitive design for the buildings in Phase II and because the platform construction was never approved, there was not really a need to continue to circulate them in the case that things changed as there was some negative feedback as to how the platform walled up against 12th Ave, a factor that can not be avoided due to the changing terrain of NYC and the railyard itself. I think many people are even unaware that 33rd St between 11th and 10th Ave was brought up several feet to be level so that the platform could be built “above” the railyard.

Why is that something to be sad about? I understand the language barrier, but there is a difference between unbuilt and cancelled, this project is not cancelled by any means.

Still, a general outlook as to massing and stuff like that is valuable. I also think that the whole shish kebab over 12th avenue (sorry if I’m bad with the text, I’m on a few beers tonight) is really overblown because it’s clear from the renderings that the wall will only go so tall as the floor of the high line. Now, if they could connect the green space on the platform with the green space on the high line, that would really be Chef’s Kiss nice.

I agree about the valuable part as it still shows an “aspect” of a future project, but like this iteration of it where the edge of it kind of steps down and turns into a seating/bleacher like setting. I personally neither agree nor disagree with the wall objection, because, on one side, it has to be there, but on the other, I feel like it could be perceived as being kind of unwelcoming on the 12th Ave side. But overall, that iteration has it depicted as being about 6’ higher than the walking path elevation of the highline.
Ironically, there is a portion mid block on the highline along 12th Ave where there is a break in the greenery that aligns with what is technically the continuation of 32nd st, I’d imagine that that was done intentionally so that a connection could possibly be made to whatever development would eventually be built on the railyards. That connection is quite possibly out of view on the bottom right corner of the first image you attached where the stairs lead down.

Looks like there’s a set of stairs between the platform green space and the high line. My question is why not extend it down the whole western flank and make a truly welcoming entrance to hudson yards? Guess we’ll never know!
Well as shown in the left diagram in the 2nd photo you attached to your previous post, you can see that the end of the railyard stops short of the portion where the highline supports actually begin, so there would not be enough head height for the trains to be parked in their normal spots.
That is unless you are talking about joining the highline with the deck and not the 12th Ave sidewalk with the deck, though I would now assume you meant the former. If you’re talking about joining the highline in particular to the deck portion of Phase II, they would have to destroy the landscaping that has been designed on that side of the highline, the landscaping is only on the east facing (inward facing) side of the walkway, the opposite side closest to the Hudson is all walkway.
