I really hope they will hide the seams better.

Seams will probably remain visible but they are a lot better now than a few months ago. I walked by this past weekend and it was much smoother. Dimples have been taken care of. But whatever is left to do seems stalled right now. I’m guessing the cold weather arriving will now delay last tasks until spring. I was hoping for a completion this fall, but . . . . . . . .

Any updates on the bean?

The bean looks great - and seamless. I also noticed something about the exposed concrete floor plates on the exterior of 56 Leonard that is interesting. The floor plates all have a ‘concave’ curve all around the edges; which is quite unusual for concrete formwork. I recall one of the many construction issues on this project was the considerable additional time/cost involved in adding that ‘curve’ to the edge of the floor plates.

Those curved edges are so slight that the overall visual affect is negligible; a considerable cost for an insignificant design flourish. I really like that whole stacked boxes aesthetic, and the overall architectural design is fantastic: but those ‘concave’ curves were pointless.

That is my only architectural critique for the architecture; where I think the “bean” has turned out flawless.

I agree that the bean’s problems I noted some time ago seem to have been rectified. I walked by it not long ago and the skin appeared shiny and smooth. As for the concave floor plate edges, I like them. The effect is subtle for sure but the contrast with the otherwise boxy structure creates just the right amount of tension, especially if you are a block or so away and a walking toward it. The overall quality of the craftsmanship is also very high. In any case, I agree that the building is very special.

Progress Report on 56 Leonard’s Bean Sculpture!

The bean has looked pretty much like what is reported by Yimby for a long time. This is not really much of a change in recent appearances. But I think he is right that it should be done this summer. Remember work shuts down on this during the cold weather.

I like this bean but it will be a scratchitti magnet.

I hope the staff of the condo keeps an eye on it. But you may end up being right stache. My fingers are crossed.

I hope they invest in lots of security cameras pointed in its direction lol. It would be awful if it gets vandalized, this is NYC so we will see.

If someone actually walks up to that work of Art and scratches on their tag; it will be a ‘reflection’ of just how lawless NYC has become.

See what I did there…
