It’s on the corner of Broadway and W 55th Street. This vantage point is new to me. I love it!
SIX SQUARE FEET names this one “2023 Building of the year”. I agree. When it comes to the class of Starchitecture firms, or High-Design Firms - Snohetta’s celebrity status is well deserved.
What is the YIMBY building of the year? I vote for 50 W 66th…
Pretty sure its 6sqft
I’m not sure out of that list I would have ended up choosing this building (especially since some of it’s competitors weren’t that special, at all). I do think overall its a nice building, but I like to wait until a building is completed to judge it, that list wasnt very good because it was a modge podge of buildings under construction and completed. That’s the thing I find the most awkward since most architecture sites make competitions with buildings that were completed that year or have been completed.
Nice vantage point, better shows the full view of the tower, this now looks like it has about 2 or so more floors until the crown starts. So about 4-5 more equivalent floors of height to T/O. Not much left.
The main dispute that delayed construction of this building involved the height of the utility floors, with one of 25 feet in the first plans. Does anyone know what the eventual utility levels are like? I do know they were changed but I wonder if the new configuration still raises the upper floors significantly higher up in the air than normal. I also understand that the rules on this have been changed since this building was given the go ahead. Thanks.
Maybe it’s just the cloudy conditions but the cladding here looks disappointingly drab.
The mullions are red, that doesn’t show in the pic. Don’t know if they get covered? Yeah maybe a little dull. What do you think of that curve on the lower right? Have to wait and see the finished product with the lighting, etc.
In the morning the reflecting sun should be really cool.
Red? They certainly look bronze colored in other images and the renders. What looks like gold in the render is most certainly a bronze color, so the tower wont appear “as” gold as the render depicts. The glass itself is dirty but even the daylight images show that it is not “very” saturated and when in shadow (on a clear day) it looks “dull”, the recent images from the last Yimby article show that.
I dont believe what you are seeing is a curve, there are no curves on this building, its just the angled cutout on the corner.
Transcendental Curve
This curve is different from the algebraic curve. The curve that does not represent the algebraic form, then it is called a transcendental curve. This curve might have many intersecting points together with the straight line. Hence, a transcendental curve is not a polynomial based on a and b.
I’m still hard pressed to understand what curve you are refering to, as I said, there are no curves anywhere on the building.
loosen up a bit. It’s curve-ish.
you are a really uptight dude
Thank you, I like people to be informed, if that means I’m uptight so be it.
Is that entire angled corner below the open terraces the controversial mechanical void?
That, the majority of the core of the amenity floor and all of the angular floor below it/the top of the podium levels.
The use of the louvers in the design is a very good one.
Both of you are right. Now lets not overreact over a skyscraper…that is for Nimbys
I see what (s)he means by ‘curve’. I would call it a curve speaking shorthand.
Someone asked me if I liked that “curved” corner just above that “terrace section” - I said YES. He then said, “but I don’t like that orange color” - I said it makes the feature pop.
I did not say, no that is NOT a curve, it is an ANGLE. AND, that is not “orange”, is more like a bronze color, or maybe burnt sienna. You get my point.
I personally do not mind your insistence on being exact, or precise in these comments. However, the question for me is the ‘net negative’ effect it is having on the forum discussions. As an Architect, you are more informed, more precise - but not necessarily good for promoting forum discussion. Precision is not the primary concern HERE - it is in Architecture/engineering - but NOT here.
I believe this forum is best when we encourage commentary from the ‘GENERAL’ public, and therefore feel free to speak in general terms. Insisting on the forum members to speak in exacting terms, and with the precision of an Architect/Engineer will eventually have a NET Negative effect of Forum participation from the General public.
That’s all I will say on the matter, and hope my observation was helpful.
