Look at the size of those steel box beams, and the amount of cross section supports: massive structural support. My guess is that the structural engineers tested for the maximum shear forces for winds in our area; then structured those fins to withstand 10X times that maximum load. Better safe than sorry.

This 1960s/70s garbage is also a disgrace.
