IDK. But next to 432 Park it looks downright stump-y. The view shots looking up Park Ave especially highlight this. 432 Park sticks head and shoulders above its southern neighbor and is easily identifiable, 425 Park is mostly obscured and basically half its height. Because the prominence of 425 Park above the neighboring plateau is so much less than 432 Park, its proportionate visual impact is also lessened dramatically.

To me this building is a bigger disappointment than 50 HY.

It was an interesting idea to so dramatically reconfigure the mass of the building, but in the end the delays and cost-overruns experienced by the developer will probably inhibit others from doing similar projects in the future.

Besides, not waiting for midtown-east rezoning (which up-zoned the site after the plan was finalized) was a major error as a 700K building could afterwards have been built here if the old was completely razed.

they got huge tax abatements by doing a renovation instead of a new building. i am sure they will make plenty of money

What “tax abatements”? There is no tax abatement for renovating a Midtown office building. And they didn’t build new because they couldn’t. The former zoning wouldn’t allow a major building at this site.

I didn’t know about the tax abatement either, but I did remember the 1954 structure was considered ‘overbuilt’ by the 1961 zoning update meaning if demolished it couldn’t be built back to the original (1954) square-footage. Midtown-East rezoning allows an even larger building than the original, but Levinson and L&L didn’t want to wait amid the uncertainty of Bloomberg pushing it through the city council (which eventually fell to the DeBlasio admin).

There is a federal tax bene for rehabbing historic structures that sometimes makes more sense to use than zoning bonuses.
