Compared to 15 CPW or 30 Park Place, these newer Stern buildings seem to embrace more ornament, which really helps. Still seems very postmodern instead of a straightforward recreation of classical ornament. It looks like a deconstructed entablature with the rosettes, tablets, dentils, and abstracted vegetal scroll peppered around.

Yeah it does help, I just wish the midsections of his buildings were less square (ie an occasional setback) idk.
The ornamentation style goes back a bit more than a century to the early Chicago skyscrapers. Having the freedom to use non-supporting, decorative facades as they made use of steel support structures they used lots of curvature and nature based motifs. It was related to the arts and crafts and Art Deco movements. Take a look at the Wainwright Building in St. Louis, a textbook, beautiful example by Chicago architects Adler and Sullivan. FL Wright got his start in that era with that firm and some of his work reflects the same motifs. Check out some of his stained glass windows or the interior grill work at Robie House in Obama’s Hyde Park neighborhood in Chicago. In short, Stern is calling on a venerable American style and using modern alterations (larger windows among other things) and engineering (the precast panels for example) to make it work now. His stuff is classic, workable, and beautiful. NYC is fortunate to have him here to do so much great work. These buildings will be on architecture tours in the future if they aren’t already.
