The area looks so much more open with the scaffolding taken down. It was a really tight space when it was up.
This is from 11/23 a month old, so a lot more progress has been made since then but ground work should be wrapping up pretty shortly, thankfully. All these shifting fences and barricades are ungodly annoying. Plaza 33 is also wrapping up quickly and some establishments have already opened along its stretch, Los Tacos No1 being the latest thing to open. I just can’t wait until some actual bollards are installed along the street edge and all the annoying giant barricades go away. Or atleast I HOPE they do…
The box addition to the building is complete, but renovations on the actual tower portion in regards to the roof and the west faces terraces are still ongoing.
This is from today
The plaza under the expansion is pretty much complete except for the 2 end parts that still have some minor work being done on the stairs and ADA ramps and in the 2 corridors leading to MSG, the building lobby is actually already opened/completed. They also finally installed bollards around the Plaza 33 portion, unfortunately with great dismay, they didnt redo the sidewalk properly and just poured them into a blob of concrete so now theres a modge podge of different years of broken concrete all over the place, its extremely hideous… i thought they wouldve continued the plaza pavers to the curbs edge.
A “modge podge of different years of broken crap” is also a good way of describing Penn Station itself.
I didn’t take any photos, but everything that is in the last photo of mine on my previous comment is pretty much gone and cleaned up, besides some barricades that have ben pushed up against the north side of the raised portion of the plaza.
The entire plaza (the portion in front of the East End Gateway entrance that is) is basically completely open now. It’s an INCREDIBLE sigh of relief to see the space so open. The more western portion of Plaza 33 is still being worked on though. I’m still very upset about how the bollards were installed though.
Pavers will be installed at those curbs/bollards later. They are maintaining sidewalk access with temporary work, the plaza paving is happening in phases.
Are you sure of this? It doesnt seem very intuitive to pour temporary concrete, there is no height delineation between the portions of pavers and the concrete, which means they will have to tear it up.
Jereth was correct, thankfully. Still didn’t really make sense to pour temporary concrete that would only last a few weeks before ripping it out to put down the final pavers (the fenced off upper portion in the photo). Work is still steadily progressing on the western side of Plaza 33 with the first of 5 tree being planted recently. I also hadn’t realized it but it looks like the works that were being done on the western plaza of 1 PENN are now also done. Overall, I’m just happy most of the construction sheds are gone.
There were a lot of people walking around the plaza under the new 2 PENN overhang addition.
Gorgeous. Now build the PENN district and its 10 buildings please.
Thank you I don’t think I’ve seen that new entrance for Penn Station on the right side of your third pic before.
Everything in this picture looks better than years before, but one thing…
I believe it was built more so as an ADA upgrade to the 123 entrance that was originally in the same location more so than Penn Station, though they do lead to the same place, but its also functioning as the evelator ADA accessible portion to get to Penn Station since the Gateway entrance doesn’t have one. It opened early last year I believe.
