I’ve bet the people who made these vicious comments had never heard of the Midtown East Rezoning in the first place lol
The text in the thumbnail doesn’t help either. It makes it sound so nefarious and that it’s being done on purpose. When it’s just the reality of a changing city. Clickbait thumbnails
Check the comments on the new supertalls on CurbedNY. They really hate any new building
I suppose but then again that site is dead lol. The latest article is from July 23, of 2019
Same with Curbed Chicago.
Funny how they didn’t criticize One Vanderbilt when it was being constructed
Oh I’m sure they did. But I wasn’t following development like that back when One Vanderbilt was being built
I’m actually not aware of any (or don’t really remember seeing any) large scale criticism or backlash towards One Vanderbilt when it was in its planning/construction phase when compared against this project, possibly because it’s not as “close” to the Chrysler building, which is one of the major points in criticism towards it.
One can’t deny that this tower will have an absurdly greater presence and size of massing than One Vanderbilt as well and that is also one of the points in criticism.
I really like the stand-alone aesthetics of this building, but it does more than balance out 1 Vanderbilt and will block a lot of views of the Chrysler Building from the West.
This building is 700k sf larger than 1 Vanderbilt and it certainly looks even taller than the nearly 200 feet height difference depicted. The 700k sf difference is the about the size of 250 West 55th Street, an office building more than 600 feet tall.
If anything the developers are lucky there hasn’t been more backlash so far.
Im questioned as to why this post was particularly aimed at me (lol) but this building is actually 2 times the size of One Vanderbilt, at 1.3 million more ZSF with nearly 2.6 million zsqft in total compared to one Vanderbilt’s 1.3 million zsqft. So if comparing the size difference to any building, just compare it to another One Vanderbilt.
I personally don’t think it looks taller than it’s depicted height (considering it’s only ever always shown as ~1555’, the 20’ difference wouldn’t change much) that illusion is given off because One Vanderbilt’s spire compared to this buildings wide crown. It actually looks shorter to me.
Can you believe that we’re likely getting 175 Park and 350 Park to join 270 Park and 1 Vandy?
How lucky are we to live in the Financial Capital of the World?
Curbed lost relevance to me when they were put behind a paywall.
Yeah I’d like this tower 10x more if it was even one block further from Chrysler. It absolutely swallows up one of the most iconic and influential skyscrapers in history.
it will be a moot point when Pfizer’s ex-HQ gets redeveloped on East 42nd. Nevermind overshadowing it, that will likely block the Chrysler Building from view from many Eastern viewing angles.
Can’t wait to see the proposals for that site!
That’s a true point, but I dont think the average lay person is aware of the scope of the EMR and that Pfizer’s old HQ building is even up for redevelopment.
However, that still doesn’t negate the criticism fact (I’m not the one saying this, though it is true) that this development looks like it’s right up against the Chrysler building because it’s so wide. The Pfizer site is the same distance from the Chrysler as One Vanderbilt is, so I dont think people will bother it with that fact, just that it will “block” it from the east river but only from a head on view, where as because this one is so close to it, the angle of viewability is narrowed in one direction significantly. So the point isn’t really moot.
The Pzifer site in this instance is almost negligible as its only zoned 21.6 and is on a smaller lot than this one (with a 27 FAR), people should be more worried about what could potentially be built directly to the east of the Chrysler Building more as it is also zoned a 27 FAR.
where stand the Pfizer HQ?
A new Supertall site?
Has Pfizer moved to the HY yet? I wonder when its old HQ will be razed.
How tall do you think that its replacement might be?
P.S.: Are you talking about this building on 42nd and 3rd? Is this building relatively new or was it just reskinned?
@007 Pfizer’s old HQ’s were located 2 blocks to the east of this project on the right end of that block. A supertall is quite possible, but it just depends on how the massing is formed as to how tall of a supertall it will be.
@robertwalpole I don’t believe they’ve fully moved, but I’m sure they are in the process of doing so as The Spiral continues to finish up. But I’d image the old building won’t be razed until a potential developer buys it. I’d say the same thing towards height as above to 007.
Yes that’s the building, Chrysler East, it was reskinned and sort of reconfigured from it’s original form. But generally, that and everything else on the block besides the Chrysler are developable.
This diagram does good to show that unless the Pzifer site is able to buy or retain some additional sqft-age in air rights that the new development wont be anywhere near the scale of 175 Park Ave so expectations should not be high at all for anything large until news comes out of an actual development on the site. Even without the additional FAR this building’s area is nearly twice the amount of the Pfizer site.
Note that height is not a factor in this diagram but even still using 16’ floor heights that the 175 Park Avenue massing was a supertall nonetheless at 1039’ while the pfizer site was only 319’ using the same plan dimensions.
