I’ve seen this in person. It’s not great. It has a bit of a retro vibe, but I’m not sure that’s what they were going for.

I was disappointed that this site was combined with the large vacant site at 54th & 7th Ave. If 205 West 54th were demoed and the three sites were combined this might’ve been a building worth mentioning. For now seems like its going to be mediocre filler.

Not to be rude but who in the hell would advocate for demolishing that beautiful old classic NY building? It’s bad enough they wrecked what was on the corner. It would have looked great restored with a giant spectacular sign on top or had its facade preserved Hearst style with a new tower rising up from the roofline.

I found this concept study/exercise on an architect’s website showing what the massing could have looked like when preserving the old facade:

Carlton (Albemarle) Hotel at 205 is actually more handsome than I gave it credit for.

Now that almost all the available spare development rights on the block were vacuumed up by this building makes me wonder could eventually get built on the 54th & 7th corner?

Yeah that corner has been sitting empty for quite a few years now. Would be a great spot for a RAMSA designed tower to make up for this trainwreck.

Those missing columns on some of the podium floors are fun, you can see the thick beams transferring the load elsewhere.

After years of different ideas, the version that finally…

…was chosen sucks?

I mean this design isn’t necessarily new news, its been known it was going to be ugly for a little over a year and a half now.

I would’ve liked it if the initial proposal for the site was chosen. Things obviously took a turn downward after Riu bought the lot from Extell, after that it was almost guaranteed knowledge of what anything on the site would look like (like all the other mundane looking Riu hotels…).

This one is literally a copy and paste (in terms of facade) of their Riu Plaza Manhattan Times Square property only a few blocks to the south. Like literally just copy and pasted.
