Yeah the limestone facade is probably way nicer than anything that will replace it
could you tear it all down for something really big?
Tear “all” of what down? The proposed building is the size allowed on the whole site.
well then whole big block
Well theoretically yes that could be done in any situation, but assemblage of lots in a block takes a long time to deal out and generally do. Extell I believe also owns the empty lot on the east side of this lot, and while none of the other buildings are landmarked, they have a lot of character.
What is that pc of garbage added to the top of that seemingly lovely building to the left of what looks like a perfectly good building that could easily be saved as the base of the new building?
The rest of the block contains gorgeous, old buildings.
Gary Barnett is letting go of a development site in Midtown.
His Extell Development has agreed to sell 1710 Broadway, at the southeast corner of West 54th Street, for $173 million, records show. In 2017, Extell paid $268 million for it.
Riu Hotels and Resorts bought the site, PincusCo reported. A Riu spokesperson confirmed the sale.
Extell is working to get plans approved for a 54-story, 673-unit hotel to replace the six-story, 52,000-square-foot office building at the address, but the Department of Buildings has yet to sign off.

I don’t have high hopes for this at all since it’s being designed by the same architect who also designed the other new RIU hotels around Midtown. I can tell it’s going to be a mess of a tower, on a relatively prime corner too.
Here are some photos of the initial iteration of the tower.
I mean that was already expected when I posted the initial design last month I was extremely surprised when nobody said anything about the design.
The renders that I originally posted dont really match up that much with the overall massing in the zoning drawings that Mackensen shared besides the podium and down. Regardless, the cladding will probably still be the same since as I mentioned before, the same architect designed the other new RIU hotels in Midtown that are also extremely bland.
Good lord, what an abomination. It’s times like this I wish I didn’t care about architecture.
I’ll be removing my glasses for sure if I happen to chance upon this block.
I LOVE this tower because it has signage at the bottom and especially the top.
More signage please.
