I will never understand why they do these exotic designs for short buildings and not for tall towers in NYC
Cheaper lol.
Yea I guess that’s true. Imagine if Thomas Heatherwick designed a supertall in NYC
Cost is definitely a factor, but nobody wants to be the one who ‘ruins’ the NY skyline and there are unwritten rules which architects more or less respect among the tallest buildings. even CPTs spire was taken down to be shorter than One WTC (although in the end it was cancelled outright…)
The idea is that all new buildings are supposed to be ‘deferential’ to the ESB and the WTC and therefore are going to be streamlined and boxy in a traditional manhattan style
Oooh ok. See that’s why I really admire 111 West 57, that exterior is just fantastic!
111 W57 is also skinny. Not much area to cover with the pretty stuff.
yeah, we need a little more of this

Serious acid flashback.
This is such a cool building.
Never heard of that firm but this building is great. Very visually striking and instantly memorable for a building its size. More stuff like this please, and less endless flat shiny blue glass.
Edit: scrolling through this thread I realized this building looks even better than the renders, which is pretty unusual.
