I respect the Hell out of most of you and especially Robert.
I am prepared to get pelted with tomatoes . . .
I LOVE this tower!! I am envious of WIllis and Hancock in Chicago and we need more black towers instead of blue glass.

I think you’re half-right. The tower will be extremely high quality. All of Solow’s towers use expensive materials, high-end architects, and are filled with master artwork. It will be anything but cheap. And they’re usually interesting designs, for those who get past the mistaken idea that intl style designs are all the same. 9 West is a terrific office building, and one of the best NYC towers of its era (granted, a low bar given the 70’s didn’t give us tons of great buildings).
My main issue is that this site is too important to have a 700-ft box. It deserves a supertall, with an iconic design. This will be more like a quiet background building.
I can see your point - not tomatoes needed. LOL …I think 432 Park looks great: a simple grid pattern of windows, and tall slender ‘box’ - but it looks elegant and refined. Maybe this one can be done with equal finesse. However, it is still something I think that was chosen because this is relatively low cost and quick to build: it is a brilliant trick if you can pull of the iconic look, yet have this very cost-effective form factor. Good quality material and refined detailing on this may turn out to be at least ‘nice looking’.
Yeah I agree, back in 2016 when 432 was wrapping up, I felt like the only New Yorker who actually liked the tower. I’m not sure how to feel about this one though. I need to see some more accurate renders first.
You are allowed to have your own opinion. These days people will always try to say you’re wrong, though you can believe what you want.
To each his own, Sir. I’m less concerned about the tower than what So Low is destroying. I’d have no problem with this tower if it was replacing the crap on 56th that I posted above.
London, Brussels are Wien are still demolishing pre-war buildings…
Sheldon Solow died.
I believe his children have been running things for a while, though. He’s been more of a figurehead these past years. So I doubt it has much of an impact on the company side.
Wonder how long this site will remain an empty lot.
There are plenty of high end hotels nearby and the views from this site will be unremarkable for the prices that are sure to be asked for a condo.
Disgusting. So low!
1986 called lol.
1986? More like 1965. I honestly don’t mind a high quality, well-designed black box as filler. But this site deserves something taller and better for sure.
This developer has another, much smaller, building going up on 57th Street: it looks similar in design. I am seeing more of what can be called an ‘erector set’ approach the the design of many new buildings in Manhattan: basically Value Engineered for quick and economical construction.
The cost and complexity of staging new construction in Manhattan is daunting; and on a street like 57th - near impossible. I can understand the need to take this safe, cost effective approach to construction in these troubled times.
I do not believe a developer has any ‘obligation’ to build works of physical beauty; all decisions must be driven with optimal profitability as a primary consideration. I applaud whatever ‘artistry’ these developers manage to put into these architectural designs: and am quite surprised how often we do see stunning cutting edge architecture going up here in NYC.
With that said, my opinion is this building looks way better than ‘generic’ or building standard - SO, Solow gets high praise from me, as a casual observer. On the Architectural design scale of good/better/best: this one surly rates as BETTER.
Has there been any progress on this site since the last entry? Also, could we please merge this forum with that of 16 West 57th since they are part of the same site?
I hope this guy has a good clique of advisors
I can’t open the article. Can you copy and paste the text?
