CONSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN IN FEBRUARY ON NEW 23-STORY CIVIL COURTHOUSE IN DOWNTOWN MIAMI
Dade’s new civil courthouse is set to break ground next month in downtown Miami after county commissioners voted to finalize a deal to build it.
Groundbreaking is set for February, a spokesperson for the developer told the Herald after the December 18 commission vote.
Plenary Group of Australia will develop the 23-story building and then operate it for 30 years, in a public-private partnership.
Miami-Dade won’t make any payments until the building is completed. The county will then make payments starting at $25 million per year if the developer meets certain operating metrics.
Several other bids that came in significantly more expensive were rejected.
The existing courthouse dating to 1928 is so rundown that it has not had a certificate of occupancy since 1976, according to Law.com.
The historic courthouse will likely be sold and repurposed. County commissioners have pledged it will be preserved and restored.
HOK is the architect for the new tower. Tutor Perini is the contractor.
Completion is expected in early 2024.
