They probably appealed their tax assessment in order to pay less in property tax…
My guess is they argued the property was worth less due to the retail apocalypse and the fact that it was producing significantly less revenue than anticipated.

are there any other plans to build anything else on this site?
There is so much more potential for the Meadowlands but the State needs to remove itself, sell the property to a private developer and let them do something. Housing, hotels, movie/tv production studios, something to tie everything together into a cohesive space.
The State should concentrate on improving the infrastructure.
Extend the rail spur to allow through running.
Connect with the HBLRT
Build a racetrack around the horse track, Formula One, NASCAR, Indy Car etc.
The meadowlands are a natural wetland meant to absorb rain and floodwaters. I’m not a nymby, but (from a planning perspective) it’s the last place where development should be concentrated.
I’d rather see sports complexes, housing, and infrastructure upgrades integrated into surrounding existing communities like Newark, Hackensack, Rutherford etc.
You would think the coming World Cup would do wonders to redevelop and transform the area. They instead have cancelled the planned bus terminal, etc. There’s still some time so maybe they’ll get their act together
one things for certain they need to improve transit there dramatically
