An eight story office building with 230,000 square feet of space has been proposed for 321 Harrison Avenue in the South End. Nordblom Development Company plans on building it over an existing 300-space parking garage. The site is owned by 1000 W Aquisitions, which also owns an existing 235,000 square foot office building on the same block, at 1000 Washington Street. As part of the redevelopment of the garage, its capacity will be reduced by 60 spaces.
According to project edocuments filed with the Boston Redevelopment Authority, a small gallery space will be built at the corner of Harrison Avenue and Herald Street to try to tie the building into the street life. The developer intends to make the Harrison Avenue side into a plaza with lights, benches and trees. The lobby of 1000 Washington Street would also be improved.
The developers believe that the new office users will contribute to the vitality of the neighborhood, which is seeing a lot of residential and retail development. Several condo and apartment buildings have been built recently or are under construction.
