One Nine Elms is currently the tallest planned project for the greater £15bn Nine Elms / Vauxhall Masterplan. Consisting of two skyscrapers; City Tower and River Tower are to rise to 58 and 43 storeys respectively. The KPF designed project will consist of luxury residential units with a complimentary service by the 5 star Wanda Vista hotel, which is to be housed towards the base of River Tower.

Framing the cylindrical St Georges tower, the twins are to sit at an off-set angle to one another, forming the street pattern below, as well as attempting to provide uninterrupted views of Central London. The towers set back gradually towards the peaks, forming private roof terraces for the residents to enjoy the outdoors 100’s of feet above London, overlooking looking local landmarks such as Elizabeth Tower, The London Eye and Battersea Power Station. Much like the concept around some of New Yorks older skyscrapers, the set backs also help to form more elegant and intriguing structures, creating lighter and less imposing pinnacles.

Enhancing the vertical slenderness of these twins is the facade. Formed by a predominantly vertical frame floating around vast panes of glass, creating crisp white edges rising to the peaks; the intricate, yet sleek exterior enhances the overall design, giving it a lighter touch

The plaza will contain a public realm, consisting of trees and grass verges surrounded with seating areas and water features. This of which will compliment the towers above as passers by stare upwards in awe, this has also been designed and opened up to please the local residents; which in turn is to create a positive outcome for everyone. The flow of the streetscape will also be enhanced to form a new district.

Despite the controversy caused by such tall structures being built in the view point of one of Londons, if not one of the worlds greatest icons; Westminster Palace, the twins soon sped through planning along with the surrounding upcoming developments. Nimbys opposed the plans, whilst Yimbys appluaded such a skyline as a backdrop for one of the worlds most famous landmarks. Now commence the rising of One Nine Elms.

##The Site

#Massing Diagram

The below diagram shows the comparison between the previously approved design with the current scheme. As you can see, the sky bridge has since been removed, with City Tower appearing to have gained some mass to its slender sides. The overall height and design of the scheme has remained mostly untouched.

##Exterior Renders

This highly controversial view is a focal point in the advertising campaign for One Nine Elms, expressing the dominance the residents will have on the impact of London.

I agree Sir Walpole! It’s nice to see towers in London with a more varied quality facade than just glass sheets
