Wrong on so many levels. It’s on top of a damn parking garage for god sakes.

The infection rate here in NY is less than 1%. Cuomo is just being an a**hole now. DeBlasio is always a joke.

How long should the lights be put up each year? I’m thinking until the entire site is rebuilt at least?

I think that they should be illuminated forever.

Glad y’all agree. They went after me on the news thread for complaining…

Nobody went after you though. You have every right to complain about this, but we can’t forget how COVID has changed the world so much in so little time. We also can’t take for granted the low infection rate in NY when other countries did the same thing and now are reporting a increase in cases.

Wouldn’t you think the lights could go on for Covid too. Have two beams representing people coming together soon after the virus, it’ll have two purposes this year

I agree that the lights would be a symbol of hope during these dark times, but I don’t think it should come at a cost of the workers who set it up.

This is true, I just think its kind of insane to act like setting up beam lights will kill the workers when construction has been going on for months, and we haven’t heard of any outbreak among those workers, who hardly ever socially distance or even wear masks properly, since reopening. There could be ways to make it safer, like testing the workers and spreading out the work to reduce density, but the Memorial would prefer not to try at all, which seems like a politically motivated decision…

I understand it would be tougher this year than usual, it just seems borderline ridiculous that they’re just going to give up. As a local resident, it has always been a very meaningful thing for me, maybe I’m taking it all too personally.

I also found it deeply upsetting when they kept the memorial pools fenced off during the spring; there is nothing inherently different from the memorial pools versus a park which would naturally stay open during the shutdowns. I don’t understand why people treat 9/11 memorials as “non-essential” when it’s a piece of our collective heritage/past as New Yorkers and Americans. On top of this many of my friends lost relatives, and many of my relatives lost friends, in the towers and I don’t want to see the memorializing treated like it’s some triviality like the St Patricks day parade

There’s construction workers working everyday with limitations, it seems to be fine since they didn’t halt construction here.

It just crazy to me how as a country we talk about remembering 9/11 and we put so much focus on stuff like “tribute in the light” while at the same time not wearing mask to protect the most vulnerable like 9/11 first responders.

And I agree with you @bpc 9/11 shouldn’t be treated as some random holiday.

It just CRAZY that 150,000 Americans have died and as a country we act like it not a big deal.

Hopefully in hindsight we will, and we will have covid memorials similar to how we have 9/11 ones today…

I know it’s a big deal and I have been wearing a mask. It’s just that it’s protocol to honor the people innocenltly targeted on that day in 2001. I know we should do the same with the people who have gotten the virus, and we have done many things to honor them, but 9/11 is unforgettable. Viruses have been around for a long time and the whole world knows, it’s common and still tragic, but to America 9/11 is still like the worst event in the country. I do not want to talk about this on such a forum, but honoring the innocent for anyone is necessary, no one deserves neglect

Here’s an example of the honor

Exactly. It’s about as outdoors as it gets, and 95% of the work can be done during the day. Of course they can wear masks. That’s about as safe as it gets. It’s actually safer than the average construction site around the city right now. There is zero real safety issue here that I can see. I call bullshit. And it’s such a weird thing to go after. Why?!

Even if volunteer staffing was an issue, I’m sure they could wrangle a posse of FDNY, NYPD and PAPD retirees or volunteers to put everything together.

I guess it would still be cool to see all the buildings come together to pay tribute to 9/11 although some of them have before. The Empire State Building could have a projection of the twin towers which would be epic! Maybe One Vanderbilt will shine blue this September 11th, that would be a nice day for a spire lighting comeback.
