Visiting my friends in Jersey City. Never got to see the city from here even though it’s on Earthcam. It was later afternoon and it looked like it could have rained but didn’t.
Fabulous pictures, Baronson!
Some sad news, if proved true, about Jeff Koons sculpture near WTC 7.
“ Then, suddenly, in late 2018, the sculpture disappeared from the park—causing locals to wonder if it would ever return. Almost a year later, there’s still no definitive answer. When we asked Silverstein Properties about its whereabouts, they replied with a statement saying the work was “removed so that it could be refurbished by the artist in Europe,” but couldn’t confirm when the work would be coming back.
And it turns out it might not be. Jeff Koons’s studio said that the work was still owned by the artist and was simply on loan to Silverstein Properties—initially for for a five-year period that was then extended—and added that the work was indeed being “refreshed,” but not necessarily for 7 World Trade Center. “There is currently no specific location intended for the work at this time,” said the statement.“
Always looked like the perfect spot for them to place The Sphere. Although, Liberty Park is a fine location as well, and I wouldn’t want to disturb the sculpture any more.
There should be a contest for a brand new sculpture. Would be interesting to see what people come up with.
I took these this past weekend. It felt pretty magical in person. 2020 will be a good year for the WTC. I’ll be honest, watching the rebuild has been pretty helpful and cathartic for me getting over that day almost two decades ago. I was only in 7th grade at the time. I remember building a model of the old WTC shortly after out of Lego bricks. I kept that model and it moved with me at least 4-5 times. It came to college with me before I eventually took the pieces apart.
In some weird way, the loss of that day and the effect it had on me probably cemented my interest in architecture.

That’s interesting- I moved to New York when I was a kid but just after 9/11; for me it was the first stages of rebuilding the center that first got me into architecture and development.
I was too young to be much impacted by 9/11 itself but the world I grew up in has been completely defined by it. I feel like it’s a really major dividing line between generations- those who remember that day and those who do not.

What it really needs are those masts back at the top and then light those up at night.
There is very… weak lighting on the roof. But not the two mechanical floors. I gave up hope on them lighting those a long time ago.
