NEW YORK | The Torch (740 8th Ave) | 1029 FT | 52 FLOORS

Cant wait to see this building’s top. Very excited for wacky architecture in NYC - really hope it doesn’t get simplified.

is there a rendering of the finished visuals on the site?

No beers on the roof for the foreseeable future!

You can already begin to see the strange “cutouts" that will be in the podium of rectangles, wedges, and semi circles.

Nice update :+1: , the rear columns on this are massive. It appears this has now reached the top of the podium/base, any rebar sticking out is now apart of the hotel tower and you can sort of make out the overall irregular C shape of it.

I suspect this will rise relatively quickly now that it has reached the main tower portion.

I wonder if the owners of those three eyesores on 8th Avenue will ever sell to Extell.

Too late to do anything about it. Now they can cash in on the new attractions Extell is building.

The concrete formwork system they are using looks so much better than the old methods. I remeber when it was typically plywood boards, 2X4 lumber, various metal clamps and nails holding it all together. I think that is still used on some sites: but this looks top notch.

I look for those bright colored beams, boards, and poles and then can tell this is the latest equipment for the concrete formwork. My guess is that many of the boards & beams are made of some type of plastic composite material that is very strait and rigid; making for very FLAT and LEVEL concrete slabs.

These are great job site photos, so much to see happening behind the scenes. :star_struck:

The top part doesnt really reflect the actual spiral motion of the tower, otherwise the video has some relatively nice visuals.

Outside of the professional renders, I dont think anyone has been able to represent the tower as accurately as @ThreeWentDown has.

That’s if they don’t go out of business, there will undoubtedly be restaurants and bars in the hotel too. The current holdouts may have their local frequenters (besides the souvenir shop) but the tourists may be attracted to whatever opens in the hotel base.

I think a lot of that will depend on prices.

I walked by this a few days ago, and saw a lot of tourists stopped dead in their tracks to admire and take pictures of this behomoth going up, enshrouding, and surrounding those “tiny” hold-out walk-ups. It really is quite a sight to see in person.

I think the glass/glazing on the upper portion (upper 2/3rds) of this tower will make or break it for me. Limited seams in the glass, and a mirror-like reflectivity combined with crystal-like see-through glass at the top would be the perfect combo, making it feel more lux and less late-90s-trashy-Vegas. I hope those vertical elements on the trunk and top are really strong and pronounced as a strong sense of verticality is needed to balance out the rather awkward shape of the top. If the glazing has too many wide seams in it, it will somewhat lose the verticality.

Anyone got a render from the Brooklyn Bridge/East river

If you check out that YouTube video posted upstream a few days ago, they show a very brief sweeping view from the east (from an elevated height). Check minute 2:34

(I doubt this tower will be prominent from Brooklyn Bridge)
