NEW YORK | The Greenwich (125 Greenwich St) | 912 FT | 72 FLOORS

It looks fine from street-level, where the curved glass and sheer verticality is striking. But it looks terrible on the skyline, where the concrete stands out like a sore thumb and gets in the way of the elegant and beautiful minimalism of WTC 4 (my favorite of the complex).

The architecture is superb; the financials not so great. I think the total projected sellout value of this condo is less than half the amount of money that went into building the final product.

One will have to hire a good forensic accountant to confirm those numbers; but I am not far off on that estimate.

The beauty of this Architectural masterpiece will endure long after the prime lenders are paid off; all is well that ends well. :grinning:

It actually gives me pain that this is not finished. Was looking forward to seeing this completed by now

The contrast between the raw dull concrete sections, and the smooth glistening glass is a very sophisticated design aesthetic; it is one of my favorite aspects of this Architectural Design.

It would have been much better if they took the same approach the Architect IM Pei took with exposed concrete formwork: he made sure there was textural and color consistency in all his buildings with exposed concrete facades. With time that concrete will become mottled and it will all blend in for a more uniform color/texture.

This is a very cool looking modernist design, one of my favorites, too bad this had to become such a financial fiasco. Good article here - rafael viñoly plans '125 greenwich street' skyscraper in new york

This tower is gross.

Yeah some people have an aversion to raw concrete in architecture but it’s one of my favorite materials if used tastefully. It’s very easy to screw up but I like the way it’s applied here. It’s kinda funny how the concrete resembles giant I-beams. Concrete and steel are the main materials of modern construction so it’s neat to see one reference the other.

I agree, there is a ‘noble’ look to this building - they made good use of this much maligned material.

The vertical line in the center; with all those window perforations softened the look of a flat dull concrete slab wall. The addition of the horizontal ‘seams’ creating a distinct rectangle at each floor level also somehow adds visual articulation to the entire concrete section from top to bottom; the Architect managed to impart a refined look to that basic concrete surface.

This building will gain more appreciation over time; there will always be detractors - particularly when raw concrete is in the design mix.

This one has grown on me. When complete it may end up as something of a landmark.
