I’m now 100% convinced the Verizon advertisements are affixed to the scaffolding or something else other than just the building. The old Hotel Pennsylvania is now lower than them in some places and they’re still holding on.
I was reminded by a post on SSP from NYguy that the 2 Verizon signs will remain during the demolition of the building behind them, and that they will just be buttressed later on since, as I mentioned before, that they are being supported by the building’s structure.
The only portions of the structure that will remain in the meantime are portions of the building that will remain in place atop the subway entrance in the building, and those columns supporting the ads. The building will only be demolished to the ground floor, everything below grade will remain for the time being.
At that point I’m not quite sure if the heavyduty sidewalk shed will remain, though I’d hope it would be removed and just replaced with the more typical green plywood fence, the shed is too overwhelming for the area/makes it feel more congested.
If only their customer service was as dedicated to their jobs as those signs are lol
I keep trying to like this building, but I just can’t.
It may change yet.
As long as there are no new renderings released, you can take a look back. Once around 1910 when the hotel was not yet standing and on the other hand in 1923 when the Equitable Life Building was built.
In this drawing from 1908 you can see the old Hotel Martinique in the background.
This is the cover photo of the three-part series on the construction of Penn Station, on the photo you can see that the site is still empty.
Two photos from 1923 at this time work began on the Equitable Life Building (July 10 and October 30, 1923).
They’re really milking that billboard
Forgot to post this from yesterday
@mtoltethys the billboards will remain until the time that a development starts to rise. Everything else around them will be demolished and they will be buttressed afterward (as is already visible).
Since they sadly bulldozed the Roosevelt, I wish they would just nuke this entire area at this point and just start over. This place is so junky and disgusting that I hate when I get caught in this part of town.
Also, is there anything to prevent the ESB from getting too boxed in?
They could add a podium and lift the ESB 500 feet. That would look cool.
By Roosevelt, do you mean Hotel Penn? Roosevelt is open and hosting refugee
families.
Yes, sorry, the Hotel Penn!
These are some extremely great and informative photos!
It looks like they are waterproofing the ground floor and any exposed column bases that have been left over since the building is only being demo’ed to this point, the site is being left in a similar state to how 2 WTC was left.
Thankfully it looks like the tall overhead construction sheds are being removed. It will be nice to have just that as an item gone since it will vastly open up the enclosed feeling of the area for the time being.
Gotta get it ready for the holiday flea market!!
