NEW YORK | LOW-RISE / GENERAL Development News + Construction

That project has a thread, nobody ever seems to post in it though.

The only reason I posted this in a separate thread is because I didn’t want it to go unnoticed on the low-rise general development page, since there’s a lot of activity on the low-rise general development thread.

Sucks that they couldn’t get the Orangetheory building to the right. The cantilever isn’t as bad as we typically see, but they probably would have been abled to add more units if they could have obtained the additional building.

It’s not as bad as we typically see, it’s worse. Unlike many 'levers that are setback, this one is the on the same plane as the rest of the streetwall facade, and it looks ridiculous. For the love of all things good and right I hope the developers can negotiate the purchase of the last single-story taxpayer. I don’t like the fact the city allows cantilevers at all, but some are executed quite smartly. This is not one if them. This is an architectural abomination. It also looks like a cat.

Am I the only one who likes it?

Yes, most do look bad - some manage to minimize the visual discombobulation.

This is one example of a cantilever that is not (too) visually awkward looking. Cantilevers on buildings are mostly awful looking because they appear ‘top heavy’ - they violate the natural instinct for balance, gravitational forces, and good proportion in general.

BTW - It doesn’t look at all like a CAT. I have never seen a cat that is not pretty.

The march up Flatbush to Grand Army begins. I’m just waiting for the entire block of 314 Flatbush to get redeveloped next.

636 West 158th Street…

So close. Just one more floor on the base and it would have looked 100x better and, you know, made sense. Thanks stupid NYC zoning code.

Found this interesting post by Tectonicphoto on Instagram taken in Brooklyn. The densification continues!

Isn’t this the horrid project featured today? I wish I could applaud this building beyond just its added density.
