Stunning.

It’s safe to say that yesterday marked the final completion of Liberty Park and the Church when a stela in the small secluded park space south of the church listing all the major donors and funders was commemorated. That portion is now opened.

Anyone been by the complex recently? I noticed they removed most of the “living wall” from Liberty Park. Anyone know why by any chance?

I’m no expert, but I’ve heard living wall installations are traditionally difficult to maintain. Plants die easier and replacing them is more difficult than if they’re just planted in the ground. Most of these installations are abandoned after a few years of cost overruns and the aesthetics just never quite meeting expectations.

Again, I’m not an expert or connected to this project in any way so idk, but that’s my guess.

Ahhhh. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the info! Sad to see it go if that’s the case but understandable.

I didn’t explore the entire area for long, but here’s a few pics from earlier this month:

From this morning. Looks like they are fixing more than just the plants.

Thanks for these! I wonder if they will just attach stone / granite to the facade to match the rest of the structure. Sadly I don’t think the living wall is coming back.

Granite will be nice. My problem with the garage is the two massive entrances facing the memorial. Unfortunately, you can easily see the interior of the ramps, which are ugly and clash with the rest of the complex.

They must have had to tear out the living wall due to some sort of moisture penetration which could have eroded the concrete. Now they are applying more layers of weatherproofing. Re: @StrongIsland ‘s comment, I think there’s a chance they keep some green elements but more tame, or otherwise yes just a simple stone wall. Either way it’s kind of a shame.

Well I’m happy to share that the living wall…will live! It’s getting an upgraded system according to this article:

Shortly after the start of this year, contractors began removing the panels, leading to fears that the Living Wall had been sentenced to death. Perish the thought. “Rest assured: the living wall isn’t going anywhere,” say Steve Burns, a spokesman for the Port Authority, which controls the World Trade Center site. “It’s getting an upgrade. The plants will thrive with a new, innovative soilless system, ensuring this unique green space remains a vibrant part of the World Trade Center.
