NEW YORK | Liberty Park (WTC)

looks fantastic. We were told a lot of effort went in to matching color temperatures between indoor and outdoor lighting. Another cool fact was that the lights gradually go off in the morning and come on in the evening, but getting the indoor kelvin to match the changing conditions was a cool tidbit.

I think the richness of the colors in the iconography and mosaics is a wonderful contrast to the stark whiteness and brightness of the marble and cool tones throughout the interior and exterior.

Love the combination of the downtown skyline with traditional Greek Orth. Iconography on that central panel. I’m not orthodox but have always admired its unique art style which isn’t really seen that much in the USA. I know some people will not love the idea of a religious denomination getting such an integrated place in the WTC but it certainly is beautiful

I agree, Byzantine style art has a very commanding and stoic like kind of presence due to the hard lines, vividness, and almost expressionless faces. I think it’s nice that they incorporated NY scenes and details into the work.

There’s a page on their website that describes/shows all the meanings behind the icons/murals.

Live feed is finally back up, It’s hard to say if everything will be cleaned up for the opening tomorrow (if it still intends to open tomorrow) but all the equipment and construction material is gone from the front of the church. They’ll most likely continue to work on the roof while it’s open. Looks like the north staircase will also open up to the public tomorrow.

I wouldn’t particularly say the entire park is completed until the construction related equipment is removed from in front of the ground floor entrance to the church, but it’s definitely getting there.

Well looks like it’s still a no go on opening

Nope, they are still working on the final touches

They are almost done with the base

This thing is basically ready to open. Almost all the base panels are up (there’s like two panels left to install).

Work on the roof and dome is nearing completion, the ropes and equipment that were on the top of the dome have been removed and much of the other equipment on the narthex roof as well. The only thing still there is the entrance left open for maintenance and finishing work on the interior of the dome with that piece and it’s cladding sitting on the roof.

This is now scheduled to open on the 5th of Dec, this coming Monday.

UPDATE:

And there goes the lift (out of frame driving itself onto the 18 wheeler), I’d assume things will slowly start to clear out these coming days

Yesterday (12-1) the fencing got removed in front and is still gone. Looks like maybe this thing will finally open on Monday as mentioned above.

I was always wary about the prospective November opening as it was only just mentioned in an interview with no significance behind the date. December 5th “is” the feast day of St. Nicholas and they are having their first service in the church, so it “will” open to the public on Monday regardless of the construction equipment left outside/on the roof. The interior is completed as far as I believe as a lot of workers were carting excess materials out of the church yesterday morning.

Image of the now completed iconography on the interior of the dome (from FB).

Well it took 21 years and a billion dollars, but this thing looks like it’s done. One less construction fence near wtc.

There was an opening ceremony yesterday but I didn’t manage to get any pictures of it. There will probably be social media posts soon

I’ve seen some photos and videos of the early church service and Vespers, but I didn’t know there was an actual opening ceremony, interesting.

It’s finally open. Crazy the structure was rising above the park six years ago
