Some new pics about T1.
I like the gate area of T6 better than the one at T1.
Same, but I’ll reserve final judgement until the finishes are in.
Agree. Hoing for the best.
Why 3 digits for the gate names?
Perhaps it’s like hotel room numbers where they indicate the floor number? Or in this case the terminal number?
JFK has a new gate numbering system so T1 gates are the 100 series, T5 the 500 series, T6 the 600 series, etc.
Example: Gate 10 at T5 is 510.
Ah Thanks. Sounds like they’re trying to simplify…but now there’s no 2 or 3. ![]()
Did the Port Authority ever consider renaming JFK’s terminals with letters? Wouldn’t something like this have been more logical?
New-T1 > to “Terminal A”
Old-T4 > to “Terminal B”,
Old-T5 > to “Terminal C”,
New-T6 > to “Terminal D”
Old-T8 > to “Terminal E”
This would have resulted in gate assignments to be “B-14” or A-27" etc. as well as being in line with the LGA & EWR pattern. Thoughts?
Except in T4. It is A1, A2 & B1, B2 etc.
This would make sense, and it has actually been hinted in planning documents that a lettering system is on the cards following construction. While I think they should rename the terminals, I believe they should stay numbered, as JFK’s status as the main international gateway for our city and country means its signage should be accessible to those who speak little English. A numbering system would be more intuitive.
This is logical. While hard to imagine, there is guaranteed to be a certain percentage of transiting passengers that are about as familiar with the roman alphabet as many here would be with the Ethiopian.
Like design in general, information design requires that it be universally understood, as if even the rarest and most incomprehensive anomaly is inevitable — which statistically it always is. Even more so in a treffpunkt of international human movement.
Forgot about this. Doubt they’d want to rebrand to a different number or letter terminal as well.
That’s another challenge. All the terminals have distinct branding around their numbers, which I imagine they’re not keen to change.
Terminal One from my airport dropoff this morning. Had to leave quickly for work but will be back for a deeper dive this weekend.
Kind of like Miami International Airport (MIA), where the concourses start at D. That’s because when the “North Terminal” was built, concourse A was folded into D, and concourses B and C were demolished. There is also no concourse I, presumably to avoid confusion with the number 1. Concourse J follows, and a new K is under construction.
Does anybody know the target open date for the new T1 and also the new T6?
(Sorry if I missed it here!)
The canopy they put out front killed the landside view of the building. It was pretty cool before that was installed.
The developers have gone hush-hush since delays started having an impact. Based on progress, it’s looking like mid-Q3 for T6 and late Q4 for T1–at the earliest.
Agree with the timelines. Sad part is that they had initially planned to open them before the World cup.
