Will Gowanus become the next Meatpacking District? I think so.

A lot will depend on the retail tenants those new buildings will be able to get.
Not sure what it will compare to then.

Gowanus Wharf is getting a huge Lifetime Fitness which is one of the most high end gyms around, but I don’t think the area will be on the level of Meatpacking. I think Gowanus will be similar to one of those newer residential developed neighborhoods in DC. They’re dense, middle to high income with a diverse range of businesses and restaurants. The retail and restaurants will be very similar to what we’re seeing in Pacific Park and Domino Park developments.

The entirety of the canal needs to be lined with stepped down sunk stone blocks to soften the suck factor of the hideous sheet piling. Grasses and other aquatic greenery could be planted to grow all around them, while certain short sections could be designated Ganges-style steps that would allow people down to the (improving with time) water level.
Imagine stones like these lining the canal:
