First tunnel contract has been awarded with work expected to start later this summer on the tunnel portals.
I wonder when the arch span will take its journey down the Hudson? It would be cool to take a snap of it going below one of the tall suspension bridges. Bear Mountain Bridge particularly for its Centennial.
Last time I checked, it’s scheduled to be installed over the winter. I assume they plan to install all the arches at once since the last in-water pier is now being cast with concrete. I’ll check satellite imagery in the coming days to see if it’s on its way or being loaded onto a barge because one of the in-water piers is in the process of having the moulds removed which means it will be ready for the arch soon.
That crane’s been there for over a week now. Given its position, it’s likely for the ground stabilization work for the tunnel as it’s needed for the TBM.
Here’s a document that explains why it’s needed.
Given the document was published this year, it mentions work commencing this summer so the crane’s presence seems to add up with the project timeline.
The 3rd and final arch is under construction. By the time the 3rd arch is completed, the last in-water pier will be cast and thus ready to accommodate all three arches which will likely be all loaded on barges around the same time.
A new live camera showing the Hudson Yards portion of the gateway project has been unveiled on the Gateway website.
While viewing the Earthcams for the NJ side of construction, I noticed what looked like reminants of an unfinished bridge being demolished. Turns out I was right. What Gateway Project is doing with Tonnelle Ave now was a work in progress 15 years ago until Christie killed it and it was buried in-situ. Since it wasn’t salvageable, it had to be removed and a new bridge is being built at the same site.
Thanks Christie for wasting that $.
Some pics from NJ Transit’s facebook page:
All 3 arches are visible (look behind the finished arch and the 3rd one can be spotted).
I’d be surprised if there is work going on anywhere in terms of construction on Labor Day weekend.
Actual progress is now being made on the Tonelle Ave bridge since the Christie-era remnants are fully removed.
At the Portal Bridge, the final in-water pier is being cast and there’s work on the platforms for the signal control boxes being done.
The embankment on the northern side is practically complete with railings and other finishings installed. The last major thing the northern side needs are the catenary poles.
Great updates!
Out of curiosity, how do you know specifically where construction progress stands? Do you work on the project or know someone who does? I don’t see specific updates like yours on the program’s website.
