NEW YORK | Gateway Project (Hudson Rail Tunnel)

I don’t work for them or have any connections to it. As for current progress, its about 2/3rds complete per NJ Transit. Given the importance of the project im surprised there isn’t frequent updates.

The next big part of the project is the completion of the arches and then floating them down the Hudson river for installation.

The final federal funding package was awarded for the project. $3.8 billion was the final award ammount and it will help fund the new Hudson Tunnels.

The cranes in the Hudson have been erecting a cofferdam, there’s also some other new elements to the east that look like they may support something temporarily.

You can see a number of the concrete beams that were built to support the highline as it spans over the casing.

The Gateway organization published a video at the end of August showing some of the stuff they were doing including what seem to be the piles on the easternmost side.

The arches in the near future should eventually be on their way for installation.

As I’ve been viewing the progress on the bridge, it is at a point where the arches are ready for installation. All the in-water pillars are cast and it looks like some kind of temporary support structure is being erected on the northern side of the bridge which will likely help hold up the first arch when it is installed.

Recent satellite imagery also shows some good progress on the 3rd arch and the 2nd one’s profile is closely matching the completed first arch.

Signalling infrastructure is also being installed as the signal boxes and safety railings are now in the process of being installed on the southern end of the bridge.

The northern end has also had good progress.
The first set of catenary poles are installed and concrete decking is being poured.

A while back NJ Transit uploaded two videos showing some progress on Instagram as well, showing a ride past the site and a behind-the-scenes perspective.

At Tonnelle Avenue, the concrete supports are being cast and soon progress will be on par with what was built and subsequently buried in the 2010s.

Lastly, in Hudson Yards, there’s work going on at the tunnel portal site with the High Line anchorages being created that will allow the High Line to straddle over the actual tunnel entrance along with excavation work.

Here’s an official update on the various Hudson Tunnel-related projects.

The board meeting also has some updates and information about these projects as well.

Something big is being set up at the Portal Bridge site. There are containers from a heavy lift company, Mammoet, indicating they are beginning to get ready to move something heavy. Within the past week, a bunch of equipment has been delivered. I will keep an eye out for the satellite imagery as it may indicate one of the first arches will be shipped in the immediate future particularly since they are expected by winter.

I decided to look up what those red cubes are, and it seems they’re part of some kind of equipment to move big and heavy things - they’re jacks. (Example of them in use below)

Good detective work. I bet those will be used to lift the arches once they’re on site.

Without a doubt, it’s for the arches.

Temporary staircases were installed on the arch pillars, and it seems the site is being staged for delivery.

Earlier today the beams were installed for the first portion of the Tonnelle Ave bridge. This project is moving at a quick pace.

Wow, they were still pouring concrete last week! Glad to see something move quick for once

It looks like there may be 2 more span beams to be built not including the one that has the formwork being built out. You can also see excavation starting and the casing walls to the right of the pile machine.

The CEO’s departure hopefully isn’t going to affect construction.

Does anyone know if this can/will once again be put on hold by the next administration?

He previously wanted a this project cancelled, but they’ve already poured so much money into it I’m not sure if he would cancel it now. Although you never know with him, he isn’t easy understand.

I’m sure he’ll try his hardest but they thankfully crossed a “point of no return” where it will be significantly harder to mess with it, especially since they received a large influx of federal money earlier this year.

Thank god, we will also have another 2 and a half months of construction and funding before he can do anything.

The jacks are being loaded onto a barge as of today, 11/7 which is more evidence indicative of the impending arch delivery. Based on the position of the barge, the southernmost or middle arch will likely be the first one to be installed although it may be moved depending on which one is chosen to go up first. I also learned that Carver Companies will be the tugboat company that will be delivering the arches. In the coming days, I will be keeping an eye out to see if preparations are being made to ship the first arch since there’s noticeable prep work being done here on-site. As for whether the arches are going to be loaded onto a barge, I can’t provide recent satellite imagery at this time because the cloud cover completely obstructed the arch assembly site. Once the weather there’s good I’ll look for noteworthy events out there.

I also found a facebook page that has a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes pictures of the happenings on-site.

Regarding the arches, the third arch is rapidly nearing completion. Careful examination of non-Gateway content posted by the Carver company who will be shipping the arches allowed me to spot a cameo of the 3rd arch visible in the top left.

The 2nd arch is not fully complete yet although I cannot confirm it’s progress at this time due to various conflicting dates yielding different stages of completion - the last known photo that has it visible dates from October 9th yet a news article from September shows more progress.
